Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Flight and a Brand-New Horizon

By late afternoon, the chaos at Teterboro had settled into a quiet, orderly new reality.
The corporate board members had already departed on a commercial flight—booked through standard economy tickets—while Graham and Vanessa were left stranded at the terminal curb, waiting for a yellow cab in the drizzling rain, their credit cards declined and their luxury lifestyle instantly turned to ash.
Inside the private hangar, the Gulfstream G650 stood gleaming under the halogen lights. The maintenance crew had already re-boarded, prepping the cabin for a solo flight.
My luggage—and my custom silk slippers—had been retrieved from Vanessa and placed neatly back into the forward-facing cream leather window seat.
I climbed the aircraft stairs alone, the heavy metal door sealing shut behind me with a satisfying, airtight hiss. The interior smelled clean, free of stale perfume and cheap champagne. I sank down into my seat, wrapped the warm cashmere blanket around my shoulders, and looked out the reinforced window as the tarmac lights flickered on across the darkening runway.
My phone buzzed on the tray table. A text message from an unknown number.
Graham: Please, El. Call me. We can fix this. Let's talk. I'm sorry.
I stared at the screen for three seconds. Then, without a moment of hesitation, I blocked the number, deleted the chat thread, and tossed the phone into my leather handbag.
The captain's voice crackled over the intercom, respectful and crisp. "Mrs. Whitaker, flight clearance is fully restored. Where to, ma'am?"

I looked out at the glowing New York skyline stretching endlessly across the horizon—a city I had once felt invisible in, but which now lay entirely at my feet.
"Let's set a course for London, Captain," I smiled, leaning back against the plush leather headrest as the jet began its smooth, powerful taxi toward the runway. "I have an empire to run."
