Chapter 4 - The Fall of the King and the Scramble for Survival

Within twenty minutes, the private terminal transformed from a luxury staging ground into a disaster zone of corporate triage.

The pilots had already shut down the Gulfstream’s engines, secured the flight deck, and walked down the steps, leaving Vanessa stranded inside the cabin like a prisoner in a glass cage. When she finally realized her fairy-tale ride to Chicago had officially evaporated, she stormed down the airstairs, wrapped in my cashmere blanket, her face twisted in fury.

"You can't do this!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a shaking finger directly at me as she marched across the tarmac. "You’re just a bitter, jealous housewife throwing a temper tantrum because your husband doesn't love you anymore! You have no right to humiliate us like this!"

I didn't even raise my voice. I simply turned my head slightly and nodded toward the security perimeter.

Two Port Authority police officers, summoned by Daniel Ross under our airport facility management agreement, stepped forward, blocking Vanessa’s path.

"Ma'am," the lead officer said professionally. "This is a restricted private tarmac. You are not a manifest passenger on this registry, and your unauthorized presence in a secured aviation zone is a federal trespassing violation. Step back behind the yellow line."

"Do you know who I am?!" Vanessa screamed, looking frantically at Graham for rescue. But Graham was currently sitting on a concrete parking bollard with his head in his hands, completely shattered, ignoring the world around him.

My mother-in-law, Evelyn, rushed forward, her face flushed with rage. "Eleanor! How could you do this to your own family? You’re destroying your husband over a silly little workplace romance! Where are your Christian values? Where is your dignity?"

I turned to face Evelyn, my expression cold and unyielding.

"My dignity, Evelyn, is why I am standing here holding the keys to the empire your son tried to steal," I said quietly. "And as for family values—ask him about the second mortgage he took out on our family home last month to fund Ms. Vale's boutique design firm without my knowledge. See how much he values family when federal marshals seize his suits."

Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls, and spun around to glare at her son. "Graham! Tell me she's lying! Tell me you didn't touch our family estate!"

Graham couldn't even look up. His silence was all the confirmation the board—and his own mother—needed.

Arthur Sterling walked back over to me, holding a black leather briefcase. He extended his hand, his expression a mix of profound respect and cautious admiration.

"Eleanor," Arthur said formally. "On behalf of the board of directors, I want to formally apologize for our blindness. We trusted his figures, but we clearly backed the wrong horse. The board will formally ratify your appointment as interim CEO and chairwoman of the board within the hour. We need you at the helm to clean up this mess."

I shook his hand firmly. "Thank you, Arthur. Let's start by revoking every single corporate credit card currently in Graham and Vanessa's possession."
