Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution and the Asset Freeze

The emergency executive board meeting of the St. Jude Medical Foundation was convened at 8:00 AM sharp the following morning in the grand fifteenth-floor conference room overlooking the city skyline.
The atmosphere inside the room was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.
Seated at the head of the polished mahogany table was Arthur Montgomery—Claire’s father. His face was carved from granite, his piercing gray eyes fixed coldly on the empty leather chair at the far end of the table where Dr. Julian Vance was supposed to sit. Flanking Arthur were the six primary board directors, alongside a senior forensic accountant and a federal corporate investigator.
Claire sat quietly near her father, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, looking composed, elegant, and entirely unyielding.
The heavy oak doors swung open, and Julian walked into the boardroom. He looked like a man who hadn't slept a single minute. His suit was wrinkled, his hair was disheveled, and his trademark arrogant swagger was completely gone, replaced by the hollow, frantic desperation of a cornered criminal.
“Arthur… members of the board,” Julian began, offering a nervous, shaky smile as he hurried toward his seat. “I apologize for the abrupt summons, but I assure you whatever rumors or misunderstandings have been circulated regarding my personal life are entirely baseless—”
“Sit down, Julian,” Arthur interrupted, his voice deep, quiet, and loaded with lethal authority.
Julian swallowed hard and sat down, glancing anxiously around the table. He noticed immediately that nobody was looking at him with professional courtesy. Every eye was locked onto him with undisguised contempt.
Arthur slid a thick, heavy manila folder across the mahogany table until it stopped right in front of Julian’s trembling hands.
“Open it,” Arthur commanded.
With shaking fingers, Julian flipped open the folder. Inside were certified bank statements, wire transfer receipts, shell corporation registrations, and international travel itineraries spanning the last eight months.
Every single document pointed to one inescapable reality: Julian had systematically diverted over four hundred thousand dollars in research grants and capital expansion funds into private offshore accounts, using SMR Consulting Group—an entity co-owned by Victoria Sterling—as the primary laundering conduit.
“This… these are falsified,” Julian stammered, breaking out into a cold sweat, his voice pitching higher in panic. “This is a malicious corporate smear campaign! You can’t prove—”
“We don't need to prove anything, Dr. Vance,” the federal investigator interrupted smoothly, tapping a digital tablet on the table. “Your signature is on the electronic fund authorization forms. Furthermore, federal marshals executed a search warrant on your personal office safe at the hospital an hour ago, where they recovered twelve thousand dollars in undeclared pharmaceutical kickbacks and your secondary passport.”
Julian stared down at the papers, the blood draining entirely from his face until he looked like a corpse. His career, his medical license, his reputation, and his freedom were evaporating before his eyes.
“You embezzled from cancer research and pediatric equipment funds to finance a luxury penthouse apartment and first-class getaways for your mistress,” Arthur said, standing up slowly from his chair, leaning over the table toward his disgraced son-in-law. “You violated your medical oath, you breached your fiduciary duty to this hospital, and you betrayed my daughter.”
Arthur’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper.
“Effective immediately, your medical license is suspended pending a state board revocation hearing. You are stripped of your surgical privileges, fired from the foundation with zero severance, and facing up to fifteen years in federal penitentiary for wire fraud and embezzlement. Security is waiting outside to escort you off the premises.”
Julian scrambled backward in his chair, gasping for air as if he were suffocating. “No… no, please! Arthur, you can’t do this! Claire, please! Tell him! We’re married!”
Claire looked across the table at him, her expression completely impassive.
“My lawyers filed for a complete, fault-based emergency divorce settlement this morning, Julian,” Claire said calmly. “You’ll find your personal belongings packed in garbage bags waiting for you on the curb outside your apartment building. Don't bother calling my phone anymore.”
Two federal marshals in dark suits stepped quietly through the boardroom side doors, moving with practiced efficiency. Before Julian could protest, cold steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists, biting sharply into his skin.

As he was hauled out of the boardroom in absolute disgrace, screaming incoherently about conspiracy and betrayal, Julian realized too late that the woman he had so arrogantly lied to on the phone outside the airport terminal had just dismantled his entire existence with a single phone call.
