Chapter 2 - The Mistress, the Monogram, and the Boardroom

Down on the terminal floor, Julian dropped his phone. The device hit the polished terrazzo tiles with a sharp clatter, the screen cracking against the floor, though the call remained connected in a fuzz of static feedback.
He didn't care about the phone. His eyes remained locked on the glass balcony above, where Claire stood like an avenging angel, her silhouette stark against the bright airport lights. Beside him, the blonde woman—whom Claire instantly recognized from corporate gala photographs as Victoria Sterling, the hospital's newly appointed chief financial officer—froze, her hands dropping away from Julian’s waist as she realized they had been caught red-handed.
Claire didn't scream. She didn't cause a public scene or throw a fit. The sheer fury boiling inside her was too cold, too focused, and too calculated for cheap dramatics.
Without breaking eye contact with her panic-stricken husband, Claire turned on her heel, walked briskly toward the terminal elevators, and descended to the ground floor.
By the time she reached the arrivals lobby, the crowd had shifted, but Julian was already pushing his way toward her, leaving his rolling luggage and Victoria standing awkwardly by the sliding glass doors.
“Claire! Wait! Please, just stop for a second!” Julian stammered, his face drained of all color, reaching out to grab her arm. “It’s not what you think! It’s a misunderstanding—Victoria is just flying out for an emergency medical board conference in Chicago, and I came down to hand her the regional surgical audit files—!”
Claire jerked her arm away from his touch as if his skin were contaminated with poison.
“Don't touch me, Julian,” Claire said, her voice terrifyingly quiet and level. “And don't insult my intelligence by reciting a third-grade script when your own phone records and boarding passes are sitting in my purse.”
Julian blinked, his eyes widening in horror. “What… what are you talking about?”
Claire opened her leather tote bag just enough to reveal a printed itinerary showing two first-class tickets to the Bahamas booked under the names Dr. Julian Vance and Ms. Victoria Sterling, paid for using corporate development funds from the hospital’s capital reserve account.
Victoria finally stepped forward, attempting to salvage her professional dignity with a sharp, defensive smirk. “Look here, Mrs. Vance, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill. Julian and I work closely together. Corporate travel happens. If you’re feeling insecure about your marriage, take it up with a therapist, don't harass hospital executives in a public airport—”
Before Victoria could finish her sentence, Claire turned her blazing gaze onto the other woman.
“Shut your mouth, Victoria,” Claire cut across her with a whip-like snap of authority that made the CFO recoil. “You are sleeping with a married surgeon using funds embezzled from the hospital foundation trust where my father sits as founding chairman. Misappropriation of nonprofit medical funds is a federal felony offense. I wouldn't be talking about professional dignity right now if I were you.”
Victoria’s confident sneer instantly vanished, replaced by the same cold terror currently paralyzing Julian.
Julian’s knees practically buckled. He realized in that brutal instant that this wasn't just a marital spat he could smooth over with flowers and false apologies. Claire wasn't the sweet, submissive wife he had taken for granted; she was the daughter of Arthur Montgomery—one of the most ruthless healthcare magnates and litigators in the entire state.
“Claire, please,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking as he lunged forward again, desperate, willing to humiliate himself completely in front of the passing travelers. “Think of our home. Think of our life together! We can fix this. I’ll cut all ties with Victoria tonight. I swear to God, I’ll resign from the board—just don't call your father.”
Claire looked down at the man she had loved, trusted, and supported through medical school, feeling nothing but profound, chilling emptiness.
“You should have thought about our home, Julian, before you decided to play doctor with the hospital’s finances,” Claire said coldly. “Your surgery is officially over. And your career is dead on the table.”

Without another word, Claire turned her back on them both, walking out of the terminal sliding doors into the cool evening air, leaving her cheating husband standing in the middle of a public lobby with his entire empire turning to ash around him.
