Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn in the Boardroom

By evening, the local sheriff’s department—who had previously been bought off by the wealthy Davenport family—was standing outside the farm gates in utter helplessness, watching federal marshals and military intelligence agents haul away boxes of fraudulent documents, hard drives, and illegal bank records.

Jake, Marcus, Luke, Eleanor, and Chloe were seated in a row on the wooden porch steps, their hands bound with heavy plastic zip-ties, their arrogance completely shattered.

Hanna sat in her rocking chair on the porch, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea, watching them with cool, unbothered detachment. Her five children were inside playing video games in the living room, completely shielded from the chaos by military-grade security details stationed at every door.

Jake looked up at Hanna, his eyes red-rimmed, his voice breaking with pathetic desperation. "Hanna... please. We’ve been married for eight years. You loved me! You can't let them do this to me!"

Hanna took a slow sip of her tea, setting the ceramic mug down on the side table before looking down at him.

"I loved the man I thought you were, Jake," Hanna said quietly, her voice devoid of anger, carrying only the chilling weight of absolute finality. "The man who pretended to appreciate the quiet life. But the moment greed reared its ugly head, you traded our family for a sports car and a corporate heiress. You thought my silence meant weakness. You thought my peacefulness meant I couldn't bite back."

Chloe glared up from the steps, her makeup smeared with tears. "You’re a monster! You’re just a lowlife mercenary hiding on a farm!"

Hanna stood up, her silhouette sharp against the glowing amber lights of the farmhouse porch. She stepped down the stairs, walking slowly over to Chloe until she was towering over the terrified socialite.

"I am a United States veteran who fought to protect people like you from destroying everything worth living for," Hanna whispered, her eyes flashing with a terrifying, predatory intensity. "And right now? I am a mother who will burn down empires before she lets anyone steal her children's home."

Just then, the federal prosecutor walked over, handing Hanna a final, crisp document.

"Captain Carter, the corporate audit of Davenport Real Estate Holdings and the Carter family trust is complete," the prosecutor reported formally. "Because Jake signed fraudulent asset-transfer papers using stolen corporate credentials belonging to Chloe’s father—who is also under federal investigation for tax evasion—the entirety of the Davenport estate has been seized by federal forfeiture laws to cover the legal damages and structural penalties."

Chloe gasped, letting out a piercing shriek of horror as she realized her family’s entire multi-million-dollar empire had just evaporated into thin air because of Jake’s foolish greed.

"And as for Jake," the prosecutor continued, looking down at the shivering ex-husband, "he has officially forfeited all claims to Willow Creek Farm, alimony, and marital assets due to premeditated financial conspiracy and abandonment."
