Chapter 5 - The Corporate Audit

Three days after the aborted wedding, the forty-fifth-floor boardroom of Vance Enterprises felt less like a place of business and more like a federal tribunal.

The polished glass conference table reflected the grey morning sky. Seated at the head of the table was Daniel, his expression cold and unyielding. To his right sat Margaret, acting as special corporate advisor. Across from them sat three senior partners of Porter Consulting—including Arthur Porter, who looked ten years older than he had at the wedding, his shoulders bowed beneath the weight of impending ruin.

“The forensic audit is complete,” Daniel said, sliding a thick binder across the table toward Arthur. “For the last seven years, Porter Consulting has been systematically overbilling Vance Logistics on municipal zoning contracts, routing the surplus funds through offshore accounts registered under shell corporations in the Cayman Islands.”

Arthur didn't touch the binder. He kept his hands folded in his lap, staring blankly at the wood grain. “I know.”

“You signed off on every single transaction,” Margaret added, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. “You used corporate capital to fund your youngest daughter’s lavish lifestyle—her designer clothes, her country club memberships, her wedding deposits. You built an entire empire of luxury on stolen foundation.”

“I did it because Emily threatened to expose me,” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking. “She found the ledger when she was twenty. She used the knowledge to control me. Every time I tried to stop the overbilling, every time I tried to tell her we needed to come clean... she reminded me of the fire. She told me if I didn't keep funding her life, she would tell the world that I covered up her criminal negligence and let her innocent sister take the blame.”

A heavy, suffocating silence descended on the boardroom.

Daniel leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. “Where is she now?”

“She’s gone,” Arthur said, a tear finally spilling down his weathered cheek. “She packed a single suitcase yesterday afternoon and took a bus out of state. She didn't call me. She didn't say goodbye. She just... vanished.”

“Let her run,” Daniel said coldly, closing the binder with a sharp thud. “The federal prosecutors already have the offshore routing numbers. Warrants for wire fraud and extortion have been issued. Whether she’s in the next state or the next country, the law will catch up to her.”

Arthur looked up, his eyes pleading. “And me? What happens to my firm? What happens to me?”

May you like

“Your firm is being dissolved to pay back the restitution,” Daniel replied without a shred of emotion. “As for you, Arthur... you’ll cooperate fully with the federal investigators. If you do, the prosecutor might show leniency based on your age and your voluntary testimony. If you don't, you’ll spend your remaining years sharing a cell with the monsters you spent a lifetime protecting.”
