Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of a Masterpiece

Panic erupted in the sanctuary.

The illusion of perfection had shattered, and with it, the rigid social hierarchy of the room dissolved into absolute chaos. City councilmen began whispering furiously into their phones, realizing that an association with the Vance-Porter scandal was political suicide. Bridesmaids in matching lavender dresses scattered off the altar like frightened birds, scrambling down the side stairs to escape the cameras that were suddenly flashing from the back of the church.

Daniel stood frozen at the center of the altar. He looked down at the woman kneeling in front of him—the woman he had planned to spend the rest of his life with—and saw her not as a beautiful heiress, but as a stranger built entirely on a foundation of cowardice and fraud.

“Get out,” Daniel said.

Emily froze, looking up through her tear-soaked veil. “Daniel... please. We can talk about this in private. We can fix this! The reception at the grand hotel... the guests are already waiting—!”

“There is no reception,” Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a cold, flat register that brooked no argument. He turned his back on her, walking over to Claire’s wheelchair. He didn't flinch as he looked down at her scarred hands and the network of burn grafts stretching across her cheek. Instead, he knelt down on one knee, right on the dusty marble floor, bringing himself to her eye level.

“Claire,” Daniel said softly, his voice steady. “I am so sorry. For my family, for the blindness that kept me from seeing the truth, and for what you suffered under this roof.”

Claire looked down at him, her dark eyes unreadable. “You didn't know, Daniel. None of them did.”

“No, but I should have looked closer,” Daniel replied. He stood up, turning to face his mother, who nodded approvingly from the front pew. He then looked back at Emily, who was still kneeling on the altar, shaking uncontrollably. “Security! Escort Miss Porter out of this building immediately. And cancel every vendor, every catering contract, and every reservation associated with this wedding.”

“You can’t do this!” Emily shrieked, scrambling to her feet, her veil catching on a brass candelabra and ripping half away. “My father is a partner in your firm! My family name—!”

“Your family name is built on ash and lies,” Daniel snapped, his eyes flashing with lethal intensity. “And as of right now, your employment, your trust fund access, and your association with Vance Enterprises are permanently terminated.”

Arthur Porter let out a long, shuddering sigh, closing his eyes as the final brick of the house of cards he had spent a decade building came crashing down around him. He walked over to Claire’s wheelchair, gently gripping the handles.

“Let’s go home, Claire,” Arthur whispered, his voice thick with regret. “It’s time.”
