Chapter 10 - The Dawn After the Storm

The rain had finally stopped by sunrise, leaving the Chicago air crisp, clean, and smelling of wet pine and distant lake water.

The Moretti estate was quiet once again. Federal agents—operating on an anonymous tip containing three years of digitized financial extortion records provided by a very thorough, very angry nurse—had quietly removed Marcus Vance and his surviving associates before dawn.

Hannah sat on the stone balustrade of the back patio, sipping a cup of hot black coffee, watching the golden light spread across the surface of Lake Michigan.

Footsteps approached softly behind her.

Damen walked out onto the patio, holding his own mug of coffee. He wore a simple black sweater, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the clean, quiet authority of a man who had finally put his ghosts to rest.

"The federal prosecutor says Marcus won't be seeing daylight for the next thirty years," Damen said quietly, leaning against the stone wall beside her. "And the clinic's emergency assistance fund has just received an anonymous, fully funded endowment from a private trust."

Hannah smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached all the way to her eyes.

"Let me guess," Hannah said, turning to look at him. "The trust belongs to a very secretive, very stubborn mafia boss who doesn't know how to mind his own business."

Damen’s lips curved into a faint, warm smile. "I believe the term is 'protective custody'."

Hannah set her coffee mug down on the stone ledge, looking out over the water. The bruises on her arms were still there, healing slowly beneath the long sleeves of her sweater, but for the first time in three years, they didn't feel like chains. They felt like armor.

"What happens now, Damen?" she asked softly. "Does the nurse go back to the west side clinic?"

Damen reached out, his hand gently covering hers, his thumb tracing the back of her knuckles with absolute care.

May you like

"Only if you want to," Damen said, his gray eyes reflecting the golden morning light. "Or... you could stay here. And we can figure out the rest of the rules together."

Hannah looked at him, feeling the steady, unbroken beat of her own heart, and for the first time in her life, she didn't look back.
