Chapter 3 - The Unlocked Door and the Joint Account**

By 8:00 a.m. the next morning, I had executed the first phase of my reclamation. I called an emergency locksmith, had every single lock on our downtown Austin apartment replaced before Ethan could return, and packed three large duffel bags with his designer suits, shoes, and personal belongings, dumping them in a neat pile outside the front door with a sticky note that read: Pick up your trash.

With my heart beating a frantic, adrenaline-fueled rhythm, I sat down at our kitchen island with my laptop to handle the financial dissolution. We had maintained a joint wedding savings account for three years—a dedicated account where we both deposited a fixed monthly amount to cover caterers, photographers, deposits, and florists.

I logged into our online banking portal, fully expecting to see a healthy balance of roughly twenty-four thousand dollars, ready to be cleanly divided or withdrawn entirely for my own legal expenses.

I clicked on the account summary.

My eyes scanned the total balance, and a cold, sickening shock washed over me. The balance wasn't twenty-four thousand dollars. It was four hundred and twelve dollars and fifty cents.

I blinked hard, rubbing my tired eyes, assuming I was looking at the wrong screen. But no—there it was. Account ending in 4892: Joint Wedding Fund.

“No,” I whispered aloud to the empty apartment. “No, that’s impossible.”

I pulled up the transaction history, scrolling backward through the months. Ethan hadn't deposited a single solitary dollar into the account in over seven months—while I had dutifully transferred my rideshare earnings and savings every single Friday night without fail. But that wasn't even the most horrifying part.

Highlighted in bright digital text were three massive, unauthorized lump-sum withdrawals made over the last ninety days.

*Transaction 1: $8,500 - Luxe Bridal Boutique, San Antonio.*

*Transaction 2: $12,000 - Silver Oak Country Club, San Antonio.*

*Transaction 3: $4,200 - Premier Destination Travel, Cancun.*

My hands began trembling so violently I could barely keep my fingers on the trackpad. I clicked on the first transaction to view the digital receipt attached to the bank record.

What appeared on that screen made discovering his secret wife, his pregnancy, and his lies look like a harmless playground game. The wedding I had been slaving away to fund for five years wasn't being canceled or postponed—it had already happened, paid for entirely by my blood, sweat, and tears, for another woman entirely.
