Chapter 2 - The Sidewalk Confrontation**

The remainder of the drive passed in a suffocating, dead silence that felt heavier than lead. When I pulled up beneath the dramatic, glowing portico of the luxury hotel, the doorman stepped forward to open the rear door.
Natalie—as I had heard her called during a brief phone call earlier—stepped out first, leaning heavily and affectionately against Ethan as they walked toward the grand revolving glass doors. Ethan never looked back once. He didn't offer an explanation, he didn't apologize, and he didn't try to stop the inevitable explosion. He just wanted to escape my presence.
I sat alone behind the steering wheel of my Honda Civic, the engine idling softly in the cool night air. My hands trembled so violently I could barely hold my smartphone. I opened our text conversation—the thread where he had told me he was stuck working late on quarterly audits—and tapped out a single, definitive message:
*“We’re done. Don’t come back to our apartment.”*
Without a moment of hesitation, I pulled my diamond engagement ring off my trembling finger, placed it right in the center of the dashboard where the streetlights caught its sparkling facets, and put the car in park. I wasn't going home yet. I needed air, and I needed space to let the rage burn away the grief.
Before I could shift back into drive, my passenger door wrenched open.
Ethan stood there on the pavement, panting heavily, his designer jacket half-unzipped, his face twisted in desperate panic. He had ditched Natalie in the hotel lobby and sprinted back outside the moment he realized I hadn't driven away.
“Claire, please! Let me explain!” he begged, reaching frantically into the car and grabbing my arm.
I yanked my arm away as if his touch were burning acid, glaring at him with a fury that made my teeth ache. “Explain what, Ethan? Explain how a casual mistake somehow married you to another woman and got her pregnant while you were lying to my face about visiting your parents?”
He stammered, stumbling over his words as his slick corporate facade completely dissolved. “It... it wasn't supposed to happen like this! We were drunk at a company retreat in San Antonio! And Natalie’s uncle—he’s a massive real estate investor who holds our family business debt! When she got pregnant, her family pressured us into a quiet courthouse wedding! My father begged me to do it to protect our family business!”
“And while this entire sham of a marriage was happening behind my back,” I whispered, my voice shaking with white-hot venom, “I was driving this car until two o'clock in the morning, destroying my spine and my sleep schedule, just so we could pay for a wedding dress and a venue for us?!”
“I was going to fix everything!” Ethan cried, his voice cracking pathetically. “I was going to divorce her after the baby was born and settle down with you! I love you, Claire, not her!”
I reached onto the dashboard, grabbed the heavy diamond engagement ring, and threw it with all my might straight at his chest. It bounced off his jacket and clattered onto the concrete pavement.
“Get out of my sight,” I hissed. “And don't ever contact me again.”

I slammed my door, locked the power windows, and sped away into the night, leaving my former fiancé standing alone on the hotel sidewalk, staring blankly at the ground where his entire fabricated life was rapidly unraveling.
