Chapter 3 - The Billionaire's Scrutiny

The silence that followed was heavier than before, but the quality of it had completely changed. It was no longer the silence of irritation; it was the stunned, breathless quiet of a miracle witnessed in broad daylight.

The massive security guard slowly lowered his stance, looking between me and the sleeping infant with undisguised shock. The senator from Boston had lowered his newspaper entirely, staring at the scene over his half-moon reading glasses. Even the sitcom actress looked momentarily speechless, her diamond rings catching the dim cabin lights as her hands rested limply in her lap.

The father—the man whose name I still didn't know—sat frozen in seat 2A. His broad shoulders were slightly slouched, the imposing armor of his wealth and power momentarily stripped away, leaving only the raw, exhausted relief of a father whose son was finally at peace.

Slowly, he raised his gaze from his son's sleeping face up to mine.

"How did you do that?" he asked. His voice was barely a whisper, carrying a weight of vulnerability that must have felt entirely foreign to a man of his stature.

"He didn't want a formula, and he didn't want a machine," I answered softly, careful not to jostle the baby resting heavily against my collarbone. "He wanted someone who wasn't rushing. When adults are stressed, babies absorb it like a sponge. You were trying to fix a crisis; he just wanted to know he wasn't alone."

The man stared at me for a long moment, studying the frayed cuffs of my jacket, the cheap plastic hair clip holding back my strands of hair, and the faint, dark bruises under my eyes.

"What is your name?" he asked, ignoring the stares of everyone else in the cabin.

"Clara," I said.

"Clara," he repeated, tasting the name on his tongue as if committing it to memory. He extended a large, impeccably groomed hand—though he kept his movements slow and deliberate so as not to wake Leo. "I am Marcus Vance. And you just saved what was left of my sanity, Clara."

*Vance.*

The name hit me like a physical blow. The Vance Group. Global logistics, shipping conglomerates, real estate empires spanning from London to New York. My father had lost half his retirement portfolio shorting Vance stock three years before he walked out on us. They were corporate royalty—untouchable, multi-billion-dollar titans whose decisions affected millions of lives daily.

And here I was, holding the heir to the entire dynasty, smelling faintly of airplane coffee and the stale fear of a runaway teenager.

Before I could process the terrifying irony of the situation, a sharp, cold voice broke the stillness from across the aisle.

"Well, that’s all very touching," the sitcom actress sneered, crossing her arms and tossing her blonde blowout over her shoulder. "But now that the circus act is over, perhaps the girl can take the brat back to coach where she belongs. Some of us actually paid for peace and quiet."
