Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Armor

The silence between them stretched for what felt like hours, broken only by the distant hum of city traffic far below.

Julian looked down at his shoes, a dry, self-deprecating chuckle escaping his lips. He ran a hand through his dark hair, looking suddenly tired—not the exhaustion of a tired businessman, but the profound, bone-deep fatigue of a man who had spent his entire life building walls to keep the world out.

“You’re right,” Julian murmured, lifting his eyes back to meet hers. “I’ve spent millions building a fortress of cynicism, Abby. I trusted no one because trusting people is a liability in my world. If you expect everyone to betray you, you’re never disappointed when they do.”

Abby’s shoulders relaxed slightly, the fierce anger in her chest giving way to a strange, unexpected pang of pity. She saw the isolation behind his dark eyes—a man surrounded by glass and gold who was entirely alone.

“Not everyone is waiting to sell out, Mr. Cross,” Abby said softly, her voice losing its sharp edge. “Some people are just trying to survive with their heads held high.”

Julian stepped closer, his gaze lingering on her face with a terrifying intensity. “When I saw you on that monitor... when I watched you reach for the money and then pull your hand back... something shifted in my head. For the first time in eight years, I realized my test didn't prove human nature was corrupt. It just proved I hadn't met the right person.”

Abby’s breath hitched. The air between them suddenly felt charged, heavy with an electric tension neither of them had invited.

“Mr. Cross—Julian—I appreciate everything you’ve done for my family,” Abby whispered, taking a step back. “The tuition, the medical bills... I know it was you. But I can't keep working here. The power dynamic is... it’s too complicated.”

“Don’t leave,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, urgent plea that sounded entirely foreign coming from him. “Stay. Not as my employee—not like this. Stay as my equal. Help me figure out how to see the world the way you do.”

Abby stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had come here to quit, to escape a toxic game played by a ruthless billionaire. Instead, she was looking at a man who was asking her to save him from himself.
