Chapter 3 - The Investigation

By midnight, a thick leather-bound dossier sat on Julian’s private desk in his downtown office tower. The Manhattan skyline glittered outside like scattered diamonds, but Julian’s attention was entirely consumed by the papers spread before him.
Abigail Mercer. Age twenty-six.
The background check revealed a life defined by quiet, grinding sacrifice. Her father, a former ironworker, had suffered a debilitating stroke three years ago, leaving the family buried under mountains of unpaid medical debt. Her younger brother, Leo, was a straight-A computer science student currently working forty hours a week at a local warehouse just to afford his textbooks while sleeping on a cot in Abby’s cramped apartment.
And Abby herself? She worked two jobs—cleaning luxury penthouses by day and stocking inventory at a 24-hour pharmacy by night.
Julian flipped to the financial audit section. Her bank account balance currently sat at twelve dollars and forty-three cents. Rent was due in four days, and her landlord had already filed a preliminary notice of lease default.
She had been drowning in debt, living on the absolute edge of eviction and despair. A single stack of those bills on his dresser could have erased every single one of her family’s problems overnight.
And she hadn't touched a single dollar.
Julian closed the dossier, leaning back in his leather executive chair. His jaw clenched. He had spent thirty-two million dollars last quarter acquiring a failing tech startup just to strip its patents and fire its executives. He threw money at problems as if it were water. Yet, here was a woman holding the weight of the world on her shoulders who refused to accept his tainted charity—even when he had practically dangled it in front of her face like bait.
“Marcus,” Julian spoke into his desk intercom.
“Yes, Mr. Cross?”
“Find out which cleaning agency supplies her contract. I want her exclusive. From now on, she only cleans this penthouse. And double her hourly rate—no, triple it. Route it through a corporate wellness stipend so she doesn't ask questions.”
“Understood, sir. Should I inform her about the promotion?”
May you like
“No,” Julian said coldly, though a strange warmth stirred in his chest. “Let’s see how she handles the next surprise.”
