Chapter 4 - The Hospital Room and the Healing Grace

While the interrogation room interrogation ground on toward its inevitable conclusion, the sterile white lights of the pediatric intensive care unit hummed softly three miles away at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.
Delilah lay propped up against a stack of crisp hospital pillows, an IV line taped securely to the back of her small hand, her breathing steady and deep. The toxic haze that had clouded her mind for months was finally clearing.
Charlotte sat in a vinyl armchair beside the bed, a coloring book spread across her lap, though her crayons remained untouched. She was watching her sister's chest rise and fall with intense, vigilant focus, as if afraid that if she looked away for even a second, the nightmare might return.
The door clicked open softly.
Officer Terrence Callahan walked in, holding a large paper bag bearing the logo of a local bakery. He wore his civilian jacket now, having finished his double shift at the precinct, but his presence still carried the comforting weight of authority and safety.
"How are our two favorite citizens holding up?" Terrence asked quietly, stepping into the room with a gentle smile.
Charlotte looked up, her face lighting up with a tentative, hopeful smile. "The doctor says Delilah can have apple juice tomorrow. Real apple juice, not the kind from the big white bottle at home."
"Well, that sounds like a massive victory," Terrence chuckled softly, pulling two warm, frosted cinnamon rolls from the paper bag and placing them on the bedside tray. "And I brought reinforcements. Just in case your sugar levels need an emergency boost."
Delilah stirred, her eyelids fluttering open. She looked around the bright room, blinking against the light, before her gaze landed on Terrence. A small, genuine smile touched her lips.
"You locked the door," Delilah whispered, her voice still a little raspy.

"I did," Terrence said, pulling up a chair and sitting down between the two girls. "And nobody is ever going to open it for him again. You two are safe now. Your aunt—your mother’s sister, who lives down in North Carolina—is already on a flight. She’ll be here by morning to take you home with her. A real home. With a big yard, a golden retriever, and zero rules about what kind of juice you drink."
Charlotte let out a long, shuddering breath—the final release of years of bottled-up terror. She leaned forward, wrapping her arms around Terrence’s waist in a tight, fierce hug. Terrence froze for a fraction of a second, unused to such raw affection, before gently wrapping his arms around her small shoulders.
