Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Medics and the First Breach

The wail of the ambulance siren cut off abruptly outside, replaced by the heavy crunch of tires rolling over gravel and the rapid slam of vehicle doors. Blue and red emergency lights painted the station’s interior walls in flashing crimson and indigo strokes, cutting through the shadows.
Douglas whirled around on the front steps as two paramedics carrying heavy medical kits rushed past him toward the entrance.
"Hold on, you can't go in there!" Douglas intercepted the lead paramedic, grabbing his arm with manic urgency. "I am Dr. Sinclair, the girls' father. They are suffering from a severe psychotic delusion brought on by a neurological fever. They need to be discharged directly into my custody so I can administer their proper dosage—"
"Step back, sir," the paramedic interrupted sharply, brushing Douglas's hand away with practiced professional detachment. "We received an emergency dispatch for pediatric trauma and suspected ingestion at this location. Stand clear of the door."
Terrence unlocked the deadbolt from the inside and pulled the door open just wide enough for the two medical technicians to slip through before throwing the bolt back into place.
The female paramedic, a veteran named Sarah with kind eyes and calloused hands, dropped to her knees beside Delilah in an instant. She pulled a penlight from her pocket, checking the little girl's pupil dilation, listening to her chest with a stethoscope, and pressing gently against her rigid abdomen.
"Heart rate is elevated, respiration is suppressed," Sarah announced crisply, looking up at Terrence. "She’s ingested a significant quantity of a central nervous system depressant. Benzodiazepine class, most likely. Where did she get it?"
Terrence pointed toward the counter, where the sealed evidence envelope rested beside the printed pharmacy record. "In her sister's shoe. Prescribed by her father outside."
Sarah’s expression hardened instantly. She exchanged a grim look with her partner. "We need to transport immediately. IV line on route, pediatric ICU protocol."
As the medics lifted Delilah onto the collapsible stretcher, Charlotte clutched the hem of Sarah’s jacket, her knuckles white. "Can I go? I won't leave her."
"You're riding right beside her, sweetie," Sarah said gently, lifting the little girl into the back of the rig.
Outside, realizing the game was slipping through his fingers, Douglas abandoned all pretense of polite suburban fatherhood. He lunged at the front doors again, throwing his entire weight against the glass. The heavy wooden frame rattled in its casing.

"Open this door! That is my child! You are kidnapping my daughters!" Douglas screamed, his voice cracking with unhinged hysteria as he began slamming his fists against the reinforced pane. "I demand you let me in! Do you know who I am?! I sit on the hospital board!"
Terrence watched him through the glass, completely unmoved. He picked up his desk phone, dialed the emergency direct line to the county courthouse, and requested an emergency protective custody warrant and a temporary restraining order against Dr. Douglas Sinclair, citing active chemical endangerment of minors and obstruction of justice.
