Chapter 5 - Balancing the Books

Three weeks later, the rain had finally stopped, replaced by a brilliant, crisp autumn morning that flooded downtown Chicago with sharp sunlight.

The war with the rival faction had been brief, brutal, and entirely decisive. By the time the police and federal agents caught up to the warehouses in New Jersey, the Russian syndicate had been completely dismantled, their leaders detained or driven out of the state. The Costa Syndicate emerged stronger, richer, and completely untouchable.

Inside the private office on the top floor, everything was back in immaculate order.

The Persian rug swallowed footsteps. The crystal tumblers gleamed on the side table.

Mave sat behind her mahogany desk, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she finalized the weekly payroll and logistics manifests. The Belize holding company account was restored, every single dollar accounted for and balanced down to the last penny.

The heavy oak door opened.

Vincent walked in. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket today; his sleeves were rolled up past his forearms, revealing the lean muscle and faint scars of a man who had fought for every inch of his empire.

He stopped by her desk and placed a fresh ceramic mug down.

Black. Two sugars.

Mave stopped typing and looked up at him, raising an eyebrow. “Is this a bribe?”

“It’s a compensation adjustment,” Vincent replied, leaning against the edge of her desk, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips for the very first time. “Effective today, your title is no longer secretary.”

“Oh? And what am I now?”

“Chief Operating Officer of everything I own,” Vincent said smoothly. “Which means you officially have the authority to fire anyone who interrupts us.”

Mave stared at him, a slow, radiant smile breaking across her face. She reached out, her fingers brushing against his warm hand as she picked up the mug.

“Good,” she murmured, her eyes locking onto his. “Because I’m planning on firing you from doing your own bookkeeping permanently.”

Vincent chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that completely transformed the hard edges of his face. He leaned down, catching her lips in a deep, unhurried kiss that erased every lingering shadow of the past.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city of Chicago stretched out beneath them, vast and brilliant under the morning sun. The books were balanced. The threats were gone. And for the first time in his life, the most dangerous man in the city had finally found a ledger he never wanted to close.
