Chapter 4 - Fire and Ledger

The private archives on the top floor of the syndicate headquarters were dark and silent. The heavy steel door hung slightly ajar, casting a thin sliver of fluorescent light across the polished concrete floor.

Vincent pushed the door open with the barrel of his SIG Sauer drawn and ready.

Inside, the room was in absolute ruins. Filing cabinets had been violently ripped open, confidential ledgers scattered across the floor like autumn leaves, and the main computer terminal was smashed to pieces.

Standing in the center of the devastation was Donovan.

He held a small digital flash drive in one hand and a heavy iron paperweight in the other. He looked terrified, cornered like a rat in a trap.

“Donovan,” Vincent said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, calm register that preceded absolute destruction. “I thought you had the flu.”

Donovan swallowed hard, sweat beading on his forehead. “I’m sorry, Mr. Costa. They have my family. The Russians... the man with the scar. They said if I didn't empty the accounts and hand over the Belize routing keys, my wife doesn't see tomorrow.”

Mave stepped around Vincent, looking at the smashed computer and the ruined files she had spent three years meticulously organizing. Anger suddenly eclipsed her fear.

“You sold out the entire operation for a bluff?” Mave’s voice shook with fury. “Do you have any idea how many hours I spent balancing those columns?”

“Shut up, bitch!” Donovan screamed, lunging forward with the iron paperweight raised.

He didn't even make it two steps.

A single, deafening gunshot echoed through the concrete vault. The bullet punched through the floorboards inches from Donovan’s boots. Vincent didn't flinch, his pistol aimed with absolute, unshakeable precision at the center of Donovan’s chest.

“Drop it,” Vincent commanded.

Donovan dropped the iron paperweight instantly, falling to his knees and sobbing as the flash drive clattered onto the concrete.

Vincent lowered his gun slightly, looking down at Donovan with utter contempt. “You want to run? Run. Tell your Russian friends that the Costa Syndicate is done playing defense.”

Donovan scrambled to his feet and bolted down the emergency stairwell, leaving the ruined archives in dead silence.

Mave exhaled a breath she felt like she’d been holding for an hour. She bent down, picking up the fallen flash drive containing the encrypted routing keys. Her hands were shaking badly.

Vincent holstered his weapon, stepped over the scattered papers, and stopped directly in front of her. He reached out, gently taking the flash drive from her trembling fingers.

“You could have been killed tonight,” Vincent said, his voice uncharacteristically rough. “You should have stayed home.”

“I’m not a civilian anymore, Vincent,” Mave whispered, looking up into his dark eyes. “Not after tonight.”

May you like

Vincent reached up, his thumb gently brushing away a smudge of soot from her cheek. His touch was warm, completely belying the violence of the room around them.

“No,” he murmured softly. “You’re mine.”
