Chapter 9 - New Beginnings

Spring arrived in Chicago with an explosion of cherry blossoms and warm, golden sunshine.
The nursery on the second floor of our estate was bathed in soft pastel light. A mobile of little wooden stars gently spun above a white crib, and the room smelled faintly of baby powder and lavender.
I stood by the window holding our newest addition—a healthy, beautiful baby girl named Maya, born just one week after the trial concluded. She slept peacefully against my chest, her tiny breathing steady and serene.
Downstairs, Owen and Lily were laughing as they played board games in the living room with my sister, who had moved in temporarily to help during the final weeks of my pregnancy. The house was filled with warmth, genuine laughter, and unconditional love. There were no secrets here. No hidden threats. No waiting for the other shoe to drop.
My phone buzzed on the rocking chair beside me. I picked it up, expecting an email from Eleanor regarding the final liquidation of Grant’s frozen assets.
Instead, it was a notification from the architectural firm confirming my project lead status for the new downtown public library renovation—a multi-million-dollar commission that would put my name proudly on the architectural map of the city.
I smiled down at sleeping Maya, brushing a soft curl of dark hair from her forehead.
For years, I had believed the lie that I was trapped—that without Grant, I had nothing, I was nothing, and I could do nothing. I had spent months quietly packing suitcases in the dark, terrified of what would happen when the illusion finally shattered.

But stepping out into that rainy driveway months ago hadn't been the end of my life. It had been the beginning.
