Chapter 3 - The Morning After

The morning sun streamed through the white lace curtains of the safehouse kitchen, casting warm patterns across the wooden table where Owen and Lily were happily eating pancakes drenched in maple syrup. Marcus sat across from me, sipping black coffee while reviewing a thick stack of printed financial statements.
“He tried withdrawing fifty thousand dollars from your joint savings account at 3:14 AM,” Marcus noted without looking up, tapping a finger against a bank log. “The automated fraud alert flagged it immediately due to the temporary restraining order we filed electronically at midnight. The bank froze the account before he could touch a dime.”
I took a slow sip of my tea, feeling a grim sense of satisfaction. For nine years, Grant had conditioned me to believe that my worth was tethered entirely to his permission. Every grocery receipt, every pediatrician visit, every clothing purchase for the kids had required his sign-off or a lecture on fiscal responsibility—while he quietly spent small fortunes on luxury watches, private club memberships, and penthouse apartments for Tessa.
“How long before he realizes the company SUV tracking beacon is disabled?” I asked.
“About twenty minutes,” Marcus smiled faintly. “He sent two corporate security guards to your old neighborhood at dawn. They found the vehicle parked neatly at a public commuter lot with the keys left in the cup holder and a formal notice of abandonment taped to the steering wheel.”
A sharp knock at the front door interrupted our conversation.
Marcus stood up immediately, placing a hand inside his jacket near where his licensed firearm was holstered. He walked to the entryway, peered through the peephole, and then unlocked the deadbolt with a sharp twist.
Standing on the porch wasn't Grant, but a disheveled, frantic-looking man in a rumpled gray suit—Grant’s younger brother, Ethan.
Ethan pushed past Marcus before he could be stopped, stepping into the hallway with wide eyes and flushed cheeks. When he saw me sitting at the kitchen table calmly cutting pancakes for Lily, he stopped dead in his tracks.

“Clara,” Ethan breathed out, running a hand through his hair. “What the hell is going on? Grant has completely lost his mind. The board of directors at the firm received an anonymous package this morning containing bank records and tax audits, and the police just showed up at the estate with a search warrant!”
