Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Floor Strike and the Truth That Stopped Time**

The heavy wooden hockey stick struck Grace across the shoulder with a sickening thud before she could pull four-year-old Lily out of the way. The blow sent shockwaves of searing pain through Grace’s collarbone, causing her to collapse hard onto the cold kitchen tile. Without a second thought for her own safety, she wrapped her trembling, bruised body completely around her terrified little girl, shielding her from the looming horror.
“Please,” Grace gasped, fighting to pull air into her lungs. “Don’t hurt my child.”
Victoria stood over them in her spotless white designer dress, her knuckles stark white as she tightened her grip around the wooden shaft. A cold, cruel smile twisted her perfectly painted lips, destroying any illusion of high-society grace.
“Dead people keep secrets, maid,” Victoria whispered softly, her voice venomous.
She raised the stick high above her head once more, preparing to bring it down with lethal force.
Before she could swing, the heavy oak front door clicked open.
Nathan Cole stepped into the expansive kitchen of his luxury penthouse and froze dead in his tracks. His fiancée—the woman he was set to marry in two weeks to solidify the Cole-Sterling corporate merger—was standing over the bruised maid he had hired just three months ago. Grace was trembling on the floor in her simple black-and-white uniform, shielding a sobbing little girl beneath her chest.
Victoria’s face drained of color instantly. The color vanished from her cheeks, and the heavy hockey stick slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the white tile.
“Nathan…” she stammered, her voice shaking violently as she backed away. “It’s... it’s not what it looks like. The brat was screaming—”
Before Victoria could finish her lie, Lily slowly lifted her tear-covered face from Grace’s chest. She locked her large, innocent eyes directly onto Nathan, who stood paralyzed in the doorway.
“Daddy…”
Nathan felt his heart stop dead in his chest. He stood completely frozen, unable to take a single step forward. He had never heard the child speak to anyone like that before, yet the word echoed in his mind like a thunderclap.
Grace raised her head, gritting her teeth against the agonizing pain in her shoulder. She looked straight into Nathan's eyes with a mixture of terror and raw defiance.
“She’s your daughter, Nathan,” Grace said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a blade. “Your daughter.”
In that single, agonizing second, Nathan’s perfect, meticulously engineered world shattered into pieces.
The woman he was marrying had just brutally attacked the secret mother of a daughter he never knew existed. But as the shock waves receded, Nathan realized the truth was far darker, far more calculating than Grace’s years of fearful silence. Five years earlier, someone powerful had forced Grace to vanish without a trace. His own late father, Arthur Cole, had threatened to ruin her life, strip away any legal recourse, and ensure Nathan would never learn the truth. And Arthur hadn't acted alone—Victoria’s family had been deeply involved in the orchestration.
Grace had hidden little Lily out of sheer terror for half a decade, taking a job as a maid in the Cole household just to stay close to the man she once loved, hoping for a miracle. Victoria, who had recently discovered the resemblance and pieced together the history, wanted the child gone permanently because Lily was the ultimate legal threat to the multi-million-dollar empire she expected to control.

Now, standing in the ruined kitchen, Nathan faced an impossible, agonizing choice: protect his family’s corrupt, multi-million-dollar legacy, or stand up and fight for the daughter whose childhood had been stolen from him by his own blood.
