Chapter 4 - The Climax in the Study

The grandfather clock in the downstairs hallway chimed nine times, its heavy bronze strikes echoing through the sprawling mansion like a death knell.

Christopher sat at my father’s antique mahogany desk in the study, his pen hovering eagerly over the final signature page of a freshly printed document stack. The overhead desk lamp cast sharp shadows across his tense, sweating face. He had spent the last twenty minutes aggressively checking his watch, anxious to finalize the paperwork before the supposed notary arrived.

"Where is this notary, Gwen?" Christopher muttered, tapping his pen impatiently against the blotter. "You said sharp at nine."

"She’s right outside, Christopher," I said calmly, standing near the towering bookshelves with my arms crossed over my chest. "And she brought backup."

Before Christopher could look up, the heavy oak study doors swung inward with a sharp, resounding bang.

Stepping into the room wasn't a local notary public. Leading the entry was Detective Miller of the Cleveland Major Crimes Division, flanked by two armed county sheriff deputies and—walking right beside them in a sharp federal prosecutor’s suit—our family lawyer carrying a binder stamped with federal grand jury seals.

Christopher leaped out of his leather chair so fast it flipped backward, crashing loudly against the Persian rug. His face drained of every drop of color, turning a pasty, sickly gray.

"What... what is the meaning of this?!" Christopher stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched panic as he tried to back away toward the French doors leading to the garden. "Gwen! What are you doing?!"

"Sit down, Christopher," Detective Miller commanded, stepping forward and placing his hand firmly on the grip of his service holster. "You are being placed under arrest for solicitation of murder, wire fraud, identity theft, and the attempted administration of a controlled lethal substance with intent to commit homicide."

"This is a setup! It's fake! My wife is unstable—she's having a mental breakdown!" Christopher shrieked, lunging frantically toward the desk to grab his laptop and destroy the hard drive.

With blinding speed, one of the deputies closed the distance, pinning Christopher’s arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, definitive click.

As they forced him down onto his knees against the rug, the folded sheet of paper he had carried in his pocket during his midnight intrusion slipped out, fluttering down onto the floor. I walked over, picked it up, and unfolded it. It was the exact beneficiary assignment document, pre-signed by his own hand, naming himself as the sole recipient of my twenty-four-million-dollar death benefit.

I looked down at him, my voice carrying the freezing steel of absolute, unshakeable justice. "The only thing breaking down tonight, Christopher, is your entire criminal empire."
