Chapter 2 - The Digital Trap and the Secret Alliance

With Christopher off to his corporate office pretending to execute a normal workday, I left the house under the guise of visiting a local garden center, but my true destination was a nondescript office building downtown. Toby was waiting for me in the parking lot, his sixteen-year-old face pale, aged prematurely by the terrifying reality of what his father had nearly done.

We sat inside my SUV, the rain drumming a steady, tense rhythm against the roof. Toby pulled out a sleek external hard drive and handed it to me.

"I didn't just find the search history, Mom," Toby said, his voice trembling slightly as he swallowed hard. "I accessed Dad’s cloud storage through the backup tablet he left in the den. He didn't just take out three accidental death policies totaling twenty-four million dollars. He forged your signature on the medical underwriting disclosures using a notary stamp from a defunct firm in Columbus."

I plugged the drive into my laptop. Folders upon folders opened, revealing an intricate web of deceit that spanned over two years. Christopher wasn't just a corporate executive climbing the ladder; he was deeply leveraged in illegal high-stakes cryptocurrency investments and private gambling rings. He had run through our personal savings, quietly drained my father’s legacy accounts, and accumulated nearly two million dollars in crushing debts that were coming due at the end of the month.

I looked at the forged documents, feeling a cold fury replace the lingering shock. My husband hadn't just fallen out of love; he had commodified my existence. He needed me dead before the creditors foreclosed on his fabricated lifestyle, and twenty-four million dollars was the exact price tag he had placed on my blood.

"We can't just go to the local police yet, Toby," I murmured, my eyes locking onto a specific legal file on the screen—a co-mingled business entity registered under Christopher's secret corporate shell. "If we file a standard report, he has enough high-priced defense lawyers to drag this out, claim it was a misunderstanding, or worse, slip away before we secure his financial assets. We need to trap him where he is weakest. We need to let him walk directly into his own snare."

Toby looked at me, a fierce, protective spark flashing in his eyes that mirrored my own determination. "What’s the plan, Mom? I'll do whatever it takes."
