Chapter 2 - The Enforcer’s Shadow and the Unbreakable Bond

Jax stood six-foot-four, a wall of scarred muscle, heavy leather, and dark tattoos that seemed to swallow the neon light. His dark eyes locked instantly onto Tyler and his trembling accomplices, completely bypassing Rebecca for a split second. But when Jax saw the slight, frail girl standing defensively in front of his multi-thousand-dollar custom chopper with her fists clenched and her chin held high, something shifted behind his cold exterior. No one—not even hardened rival club members—had ever stood up to protect his machine. Especially not a terrified, exhausted teenager working a minimum-wage graveyard shift in a godforsaken diner.
“You dropped something,” Jax’s deep, gravelly voice vibrated through the cold air like a rolling thunderclap.
Tyler turned around, locking eyes with the legendary enforcer. Color instantly drained from Tyler’s face as he recognized the insignia on Jax’s vest. The heavy steel tire iron slipped from Tyler’s shaking fingers, clattering loudly against the pavement. “J-Jax... man, we didn't know this was your ride—we were just messing around—”
“You were about to make the biggest mistake of your miserable life,” Jax growled, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward. He didn't even throw a punch. The sheer, crushing aura of his presence was enough. Tyler and his two terrified buddies tripped over their own feet, scrambling backward into their sedan, peeling out of the parking lot with tires screeching and rubber burning into the night.
Silence rushed back into the desolate lot, broken only by the hum of the busted neon sign. Jax turned his heavy gaze down toward Rebecca. She stood frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, suddenly realizing the magnitude of what she had just done. She had crossed paths with a dangerous outlaw, and she expected him to brush her aside or curse her for meddling.
Instead, Jax walked over to his bike, reached into his saddlebag, and pulled out a heavy, worn leather riding jacket bearing the Iron Skulls patch. Without a word, he draped it over Rebecca’s shivering shoulders. The jacket was warm, smelling faintly of engine oil, leather, and cedar, and it swallowed her completely, falling past her knees.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve, kid,” Jax said, his voice softening just a fraction as he looked down at her bruised knuckles and tired eyes. “What’s your name?”
“Rebecca,” she whispered, pulling the heavy jacket tighter around herself.
“Well, Rebecca,” Jax said, pulling a heavy silver ring from his thumb and dropping it gently into her palm. “You just saved a lot of blood tonight. The Iron Skulls don't forget debts. If anyone ever gives you trouble in this town—anyone at all—you show them that ring, or you call the number burned into the inside lining of this jacket. You understand me?”
May you like
Rebecca nodded slowly, looking down at the heavy silver ring resting in her hand. For the first time in her miserable, lonely life, a tiny spark of profound safety flickered in the dark. Little did she know, that single jacket and that single ring had just tied her fate to an entire underground brotherhood that would tear the world apart to keep her safe.
