Chapter 4 - The Underground Shootout and the Escape into the Storm

The chapel descended into absolute, deafening chaos.

As the emergency backup generators kicked in with a harsh, humming whine, bathed in an eerie red strobe light, Lorenzo didn't hesitate for a single second. Moving with the terrifying, explosive speed of a trained apex predator, he lunged forward, grabbing Viktor’s wrist and wrenching the pistol upward just as a deafening gunshot cracked through the stone room.

The bullet shattered a stained-glass window high above the altar.

Lorenzo delivered a brutal, bone-crushing right hook to Viktor’s jaw, sending the head of security crashing backward over a wooden pew.

“Take Lena and run!” Lorenzo roared over the sound of gunfire, drawing his own weapon and firing two precise shots into the chest of the nearest advancing mercenary.

Valentina shrieked in absolute terror, scrambling backward toward the exit as the smoke filled the chapel. “Kill them! Kill them all!” she screamed at the remaining guards.

I didn't freeze. Years of surviving on the rough streets of Chicago before entering domestic service had taught me one vital lesson: when predators fight, you run. I scooped six-year-old Lena up into my arms, hugging her tightly against my chest, and bolted down the narrow stone spiral staircase located behind the altar—a secret secondary exit I had discovered months ago while scrubbing the chapel floorboards.

“Hold on to me, baby! Don't look back!” I cried out, my bare feet pounding against the cold stone steps as bullets ricocheted off the iron handrails behind us.

We burst out into the subterranean service tunnels beneath the Moretti estate—a labyrinth of concrete corridors, steam pipes, and electrical junctions that connected the mansion to the outer staff quarters. The air was hot, humid, and smelled heavily of ozone from the damaged power grid.

Footsteps echoed heavily behind us. Someone was pursuing us down the narrow corridor.

I ducked behind a massive industrial HVAC unit, setting Lena down behind a concrete pillar. “Stay here, sweetie. Don't make a sound,” I whispered fiercely, my heart hammering in my throat.

A shadow loomed around the corner. It wasn't a mercenary. It was Valentina Ricci.

She looked unhinged, her designer silk gown torn, her hair wild, and a small silver revolver gripped tightly in her manicured hand. She was hunting us down herself.

“Sophia! You miserable little rat!” Valentina yelled into the empty corridor, her voice echoing shrilly. “You think you can ruin my life and walk away? Come out, and maybe I’ll make the girl’s death quick!”

My blood ran cold. She was right there, just twenty feet away.

I looked around the dark, industrial room. My eyes landed on a heavy copper pressure valve connected to the main steam line. Without a second thought, I grabbed the heavy iron wheel and wrenched it open with all my remaining strength.

*Hiiiiissssss!*

A thick, scalding cloud of high-pressure white steam blasted directly out of the overhead valve, filling the corridor with a blinding, roaring wall of white heat right between Valentina and our hiding spot.

“Aghhh!” Valentina shrieked, dropping her revolver as the scalding steam scorched her arms, stumbling backward into the concrete wall in agonizing pain.

I grabbed Lena’s hand again, darting past the hissing steam cloud and sprinting straight toward the heavy metal exit door that led out into the pouring rain.
