Chapter 3 - The Trap Closes and the Unknown Caller

The ambient light from the chapel candles flickered violently as a cold gust of wind swept in from the open courtyard. Standing in the doorway wasn't Valentina. It was Viktor, the estate’s head of security, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries wearing unmarked tactical gear.
Viktor’s hand rested casually on the grip of a suppressed 9mm pistol hanging at his hip. The polite, deferential bow he usually offered his boss was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, arrogant smirk.
“I wouldn't celebrate too early, Boss,” Viktor said smoothly, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceilings. “You found the vault. Congratulations. You were always too thorough for your own good.”
Lorenzo didn't flinch. He stepped smoothly in front of me and Lena, his massive frame shielding us from the armed men, while his right hand slid imperceptibly toward the custom firearm holstered beneath his suit jacket.
“You sold out to the opposition, Viktor?” Lorenzo asked, his voice deceptively calm, carrying a lethal, coiled-spring tension. “How much did Valentina’s family pay you to look the other way?”
“More than loyalty ever earned me in this syndicate,” Viktor replied with a dry chuckle, gesturing with his chin for the mercenaries to raise their weapons. “Besides, empires fall, Lorenzo. Even yours. Valentina was just the bait to keep you distracted while we restructured the board from the inside out.”
Valentina appeared behind Viktor, her composure fully restored, a triumphant sneer curling her lips. She stepped past the armed guards, walking into the chapel and looking at me with undisguised venom.
“Did you really think a peasant maid could outsmart us, Sophia?” Valentina mocked, her voice dripping with poison. “You found a key. Bravo. But you forgot one golden rule of the underworld: those who hold the guns write the history.”
Lorenzo’s eyes flashed with pure, unadulterated murder. He took a half-step forward, his muscles bunching to strike.
“Don't try it, Lorenzo,” Viktor warned, leveling his pistol directly at Lorenzo’s chest. “One twitch, and the girl and her brat get ventilated right here on holy ground.”
I gasped, pulling little Lena tighter against my skirt, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs. I had risked everything to expose them, believing that Lorenzo’s power would keep us safe. Now, we were trapped in the dark corner of a chapel with guns pointed at our heads.
Suddenly, the eerie silence of the room was broken by a sharp, vibrating chime.
It wasn't a gunshot. It was a cell phone.
Viktor frowned, pulling his encrypted satellite phone from his tactical vest pocket. He glanced down at the glowing screen, expecting a routine confirmation code from the syndicate council.
Instead, the screen flashed a single, terrifying red warning prompt accompanied by an anonymous text message from an unregistered number:
**“You failed to secure the chapel vault in time. The perimeter is breached. Clean up the mess immediately, or you are all dead men.”**
Viktor’s face instantly drained of all color. His eyes darted toward the heavy oak doors of the chapel.

Before he could shout a warning, a dull, thunderous explosion rocked the western wing of the estate. The ground beneath our feet shuddered violently, and the lights in the chapel flickered and died, plunging the room into chaotic, smoky darkness.
