THE MAFIA DON’S WRATH / Chapter 1 / 5

Chapter 1 - The Shattered Shawl and the Bloodline’s Fury**

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Astor Ballroom cast a dazzling, blinding light over the sea of pastel balloons, silver-wrapped gift boxes, and high-society socialites chatting merrily over flutes of sparkling cider. It was supposed to be the premier baby shower of the Upper East Side season—a celebration of life, luxury, and the merging of two powerful New York dynasties. But beneath the polished veneer of champagne flutes and forced smiles, a suffocating tension had been building for months.

At the center of it all stood Emily Moretti-Hale. Seven months pregnant, pale, and trembling with a exhaustion that sleep could never fix, she clutched a light silk shawl tightly around her shoulders. She wore it like a shield against a world she no longer recognized.

Across the room, her mother-in-law, Linda Hale, watched her with narrowed, predatory eyes. Linda hated loose ends. She hated anything that threatened the immaculate, untouchable public image of the Hale family real estate empire. And lately, Emily had been looking far too fragile, far too broken to keep up appearances.

Before Emily could slip away toward the terrace, Linda crossed the parquet floor with terrifying speed. With a sudden, vicious yank, Linda fisted one hand in Emily’s silk shawl and tore it from her shoulders so hard the fabric hissed sharply through the air.

Gasps rippled instantly through the cluster of high-society guests nearest them.

The shawl fell to the floor, exposing Emily’s bare arms to the unforgiving glare of the crystal lights. The room went dead silent. Across her delicate skin sprawled a horrific map of abuse—dark, brutal fingerprints, fading greenish-yellow shadows, and deep purple welts. They were the unmistakable marks of a violent grip, the kind no elegant sleeve or heavy foundation could hide forever.

For one raw, agonizing second, Emily stood completely exposed beneath the chandeliers. One hand flew protectively to her swollen belly to shield her unborn child, while her other hand reached up too late to stop Linda from striking her hard across the face.

A sharp slap echoed through the ballroom.

Then Linda lunged forward, panic cracking violently through her painted, cosmetic smile as she snatched the shawl from the floor. She aggressively shoved it back over Emily’s bruised arms, hissing under her breath, “Cover those before your father sees!”

But it was too late. The damage was done. The secret was out.

From the shadowed archway of the adjoining executive council room, Salvatore Moretti stepped out onto the marble floor.

Salvatore was a man who commanded entire shipping ports, real estate blocks, and underground syndicates with a single raised eyebrow. At fifty-five, his silver-streaked dark hair, sharp tailoring, and ice-cold demeanor made him the most feared patriarch in Manhattan.

He stopped cold at the edge of the celebration.

His dark, piercing gaze moved once—taking in Emily’s trembling, tear-streaked mouth, then dropping to the horrifying marks covering her arms, and finally locking onto Ryan Hale’s hand, which was still aggressively gripping his pregnant wife’s upper arm as if she were a prisoner of war.

Emily never once looked at her husband. She didn't call out to Ryan. She turned her tear-filled eyes away from the crowd and went straight toward her father.

“Dad…” Her voice broke, shattering the heavy silence as she reached him, clutching his dark suit jacket like a drowning sailor. “Please, take me home.”

Before Salvatore could move, Ryan stepped forward, his face flushed with panic as he tried to regain control of the narrative. He caught Emily’s arm to pull her back, babbling too fast. “She falls! She’s always so clumsy, she always blames me for her own accidents—”

Before Ryan could finish the lie, Salvatore Moretti moved with the terrifying speed of a striking viper.

Salvatore ripped Ryan’s hand away from his daughter’s arm as if he were tearing off a filthy parasite. When Ryan panicked and lunged forward again, Salvatore drove his fist straight into Ryan’s upper body with a sickening crack that silenced the entire two-hundred-person ballroom.

Ryan staggered backward, crashing violently into a mahogany display table stacked high with crystal-wrapped baby gifts, sending shards of glass and silver boxes clattering across the floor.

Linda shrieked in horror and rushed toward Emily, her fingernails clawing out like a desperate cat. But Salvatore’s arm shot out like a steel beam. He seized Linda by the shoulder and shoved her so violently that she tripped over her own designer heels and nearly crashed across a row of gold-plated guest chairs.

“Touch my daughter again,” Salvatore whispered, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register that made every guest in the room freeze in sheer terror, “and you won't live to see tomorrow.”
