Chapter 1 - The Midnight Mistake in the Back of the Beast

The fluorescent lights of St. Catherine’s Medical Center had long since blurred from harsh white to a nauseating, humming yellow in Bianca Carter’s sleep-deprived brain. Twenty-four hours. Twenty-four hours of standing on her feet, dodging flying medical charts, managing flatlining monitors, and comforting grieving families while her own body screamed for mercy. When the clock finally hit 7:00 AM, Bianca felt less like a living human being and more like a ghost haunting the third-floor trauma ward.

She dragged her worn-out sneakers across the linoleum, her fingers tightly clutching her canvas tote bag. Her brain was fried, her shoulders were weighed down by lead, and her eyes felt like they had been rubbed raw with sandpaper. All she wanted was her twin-sized mattress, a heavy blanket, and absolute, uninterrupted darkness.

Outside the southern emergency exit, the freezing autumn wind bit sharply through her thin scrubs. She pulled out her phone with a trembling thumb, her vision swimming slightly as she tapped her rideshare app.

*Searching for your driver...*

*Black SUV. South entrance.*

She looked up. Idling right by the curb, its tinted windows gleaming like obsidian under the flickering streetlamps, was a massive, luxury black SUV. Without checking the license plate, without glancing at the driver’s profile, and without a single functioning brain cell left to analyze her surroundings, Bianca marched up to the vehicle, pulled open the heavy rear door, and climbed inside.

The moment she sank into the upholstery, a sigh of profound relief escaped her lips. But even through her exhausted haze, a subconscious part of her registered that something was profoundly off.

The leather seats weren't the cracked faux-leather of a budget rental; they felt like buttery-soft Italian calfskin that cost more than her annual student loan payment. The silence inside was absolute, heavy, and meticulously controlled, stripped of the usual static radio noise. And the air—the air carried a subtle, intoxicating scent of expensive cedarwood, dark roasted espresso, and something sharper, colder. Something that whispered of quiet power and absolute danger.

Too tired to care, Bianca let her head loll back against the headrest.

She never heard the front-seat driver freeze, half-turning in his seat to stammer, "Sir... there’s... there’s already someone in the back."

She never noticed the towering, impeccably dressed man sitting merely inches away from her in the shadows of the rear cabin, his dark gaze shifting slowly from his laptop screen to her slumped shoulders.

Within three seconds, Bianca was fast asleep, her breathing evening out as she inadvertently drifted off right beside the most feared man in Manhattan.

Minutes ticked by in total silence. The driver looked nervously back and forth between the rearview mirror and his boss, waiting for the command to throw the intruder out onto the concrete. But Tristan Bellamy merely held up a single, gloved hand, signaling the driver to stay silent. He sat completely still, watching the exhausted nurse lean unconsciously closer to his shoulder until her head gently drifted against his tailored lapel.

A flicker of amusement—so foreign it felt like a physical shock—crossed Tristan’s cold, unyielding face. He didn't move. He simply let her sleep.
