Chapter 5 - The Master of the City**

Dominic hadn't made a sound when he entered the hospital. He wore a dark wool coat, his face cast in hard, unforgiving shadows beneath the dim emergency lights. Two of his massive enforcers flanked the doorway behind him, cutting off any possible exit.
“You’re breaking my arm! Who the hell are you?!” Marcus shrieked, his face turning pale with excruciating pain as Dominic steadily increased the pressure on his wrist.
Dominic did not answer him immediately. Instead, his asphalt-colored eyes shifted slowly to Clara, noting the terror in her face and the red mark forming on her wrist. A cold, terrifying fury radiated from his broad shoulders—a rage far deeper and darker than the grief he had shown over his brother.
Dominic looked back at Marcus, his voice a low, lethal purr. “I am the man who owns this city, asshole. And you just laid your hands on my nurse.”
“I’m her fiancé!” Marcus lied desperately, sweat beading on his forehead. “This is a domestic matter! Stay out of it!”
“Fiancé?” Dominic tilted his head, a humorless, cruel smile touching the corner of his mouth. He squeezed harder, and a sickening pop echoed through the quiet lobby. Marcus screamed, collapsing to his knees on the linoleum floor. “She doesn't have a fiancé. She has a nightmare. And I specialize in ending nightmares.”
Dominic gestured casually with his free hand. The two enforcers stepped forward instantly, hauling Marcus up by his shoulders with terrifying efficiency. Marcus flailed wildly, sobbing in terror as they dragged him backward toward the exit doors.
“Please! Don’t kill me! What are you going to do with me?!” Marcus cried out, his elite social standing melting away into pathetic cowardice.
“You’re going on a very long, permanent vacation to a place where people who hit women don’t ever see the sun,” Dominic replied coldly, his voice devoid of any human mercy.
The heavy glass doors swung open, swallowing Marcus and the enforcers into the rainy night, leaving behind absolute silence.
Clara stood frozen behind the nurses’ station, her chest heaving, tears spilling hot and fast down her cheeks. The ghost that had haunted her entire life had just been erased in less than two minutes by the most dangerous man in the state.
Dominic turned back to face her. The brutal, lethal predator vanished in an instant, replaced by a man who looked at her with profound, aching gentleness. He stepped slowly behind the counter, stopping just inches away. He didn't raise his hand. He didn't crowd her space.
He simply held out a clean, warm handkerchief.
“You’re safe now, Clara,” Dominic said softly, his voice steady and grounding. “He’s never coming back. No one will ever touch you like that again. You have my word.”
Clara looked at the handkerchief, then up into his dark, steadfast eyes. For the first time in her life, the flinch wasn't there. Her shoulders relaxed. The heavy, crushing weight she had carried across state lines finally shattered and fell away into the sterile floor.
She reached out, took the handkerchief from his hand, and for the first time in years, Clara Hayes smiled through her tears.
“Thank you, Dominic,” she whispered.

Dominic gently covered her trembling hand with his own large, warm palm, his thumb brushing away a tear from her cheek. “Come on, Clara. Let’s get you out of here. Your shift is over.”
And as they walked out together into the quiet dawn, leaving the pale purgatory of St. Jude’s far behind, Clara knew her life had changed forever—not because she was saved by a monster, but because she had finally found a man whose raised hand would only ever be used to protect her.
