Chapter 4 - The Shadow at the Door**

Two weeks passed before Dominic Gallo crossed Clara’s path again.
Toby had survived the emergency surgery, spent a week in intensive care, and was eventually discharged back into the private, heavily guarded care of his older brother’s estate. Clara returned to her grinding routine on the graveyard shift, trying desperately to forget the intense, asphalt-colored eyes of the city’s most dangerous man. But the gold-leaf card remained tucked securely beneath the lining of her locker badge holder—a silent, heavy reminder that her world had shifted on its axis.
It happened on a rainy Tuesday night at 2:00 a.m.
The hospital was quiet, save for the patter of heavy raindrops against the tall emergency bay windows. Clara was sitting at the nurses’ station updating patient charts when the heavy glass doors drifted open.
There were no shouting enforcers this time. No bloody shirts or chaotic crashes.
A single figure stepped inside, slipping through the automated doors like a ghost escaping the storm.
Clara looked up, and her breath caught.
It wasn't Dominic. It was a man she had prayed every single night of her adult life she would never, ever have to see again.
Marcus Vance.
Her former fiancé—a man of high society wealth, polished public charm, and unimaginable private sadism. The man whose heavy, ringed hand had taught Clara the exact flinch she had displayed in the trauma bay for Dominic Gallo. Marcus looked older, his tailored trench coat damp from the rain, but his eyes held that familiar, predatory gleam.
“Hello, Clara,” Marcus smiled smoothly, stepping behind the high nurses’ counter before she could retreat. “You were hard to track down. Moving across the country was clever, darling, but money always finds a way.”
Clara’s blood ran cold, her fingers gripping the edge of the counter so tightly her knuckles turned white. All the progress, all the fierce independence she had built in St. Jude’s, threatened to crumble in a single second. The old terror reared its ugly head, paralyzing her vocal cords.
“What are you doing here?” Clara managed to whisper, her voice trembling.
“Taking what’s mine,” Marcus sneered, his polished facade cracking to reveal the cruel monster underneath. He reached across the counter, his fingers clamping painfully around her wrist with iron force. “You think you can just run out on our engagement and hide in a charity ward? Pack your bag, Clara. We’re going home.”
Clara tried to wrench her arm away, but Marcus was too strong, pulling her viciously across the counter. “Let go of me!” she hissed, panic blinding her.
“Shut your mouth,” Marcus snarled, raising his other hand, drawing his arm back to deliver the familiar, punishing blow that had terrorized her for years.
Clara closed her eyes, her body instinctively preparing to cower—just as she had done with Dominic.
Only this time, the blow never started.
A heavy, gloved hand suddenly clamped around Marcus’s wrist with the crushing force of a hydraulic press.
Marcus let out a sharp cry of agony as the bones in his forearm ground together under the sudden, brutal pressure. He whipped his head around, gasping in shock.

Standing right beside the counter, materializing out of the shadows like an avenging angel of death, was Dominic Gallo.
