Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of the Maybach**

The heavy glass doors of the Plaza swung shut behind them, cutting off the deafening roar of the ballroom and replacing it with the steady, rhythmic drumming of rain against concrete. The Manhattan night was a blur of neon reflections smeared across the wet asphalt as Vincent’s elite security detail converged around them with military precision, holding heavy black umbrellas over their heads.
Leo held the rear door of the armored Maybach open, his eyes darting frantically up and down 5th Avenue while scanning the shadows for any sign of Viktor or secondary operatives.
"Car is clean, boss," Leo muttered, slamming the door shut the moment Mave and Vincent slid into the leather-lined interior. "Driver's got us locked on the inner-ring bypass. No followers so far."
The heavy door sealed shut, instantly deadening the external sounds of the city into a heavy, suffocating quiet. The interior of the car smelled of expensive leather, rain, and the faint, clean scent of Vincent’s sandalwood cologne. As the Maybach glided smoothly away from the curb into the stream of evening traffic, neither of them spoke for several miles.
Mave sat rigidly on the edge of the plush leather seat, her hands folded tightly in her lap. The silk of her midnight-blue dress felt restrictive, a costume from a world she suddenly realized she didn't understand at all.
"You lied to me," Mave finally broke the silence, her voice trembling slightly with a mixture of shock and suppressed fury.
Vincent did not look away from the tinted window, watching the blurred streaks of city lights race past. "About what?"
"Don't play games with me, Vincent," she snapped, turning to face him, her eyes flashing with sudden courage. "For three years, I believed I was running a legitimate logistics firm that occasionally dealt with difficult municipal contracts. That man knew about the offshore accounts. He knew about the money laundering, the trucking firms, the Belize routing. I’m not just a secretary balancing shipping manifests, am I? I’m an accessory to a syndicate."
Vincent turned his head slowly, meeting her fierce gaze with an expression of profound, guarded exhaustion. The public mask was entirely gone, leaving behind a man weighed down by decades of inherited violence and survival.
"I built Costa Logistics to pull my family's name out of the gutters of Queens," Vincent said, his voice deep and uncompromising. "Every dollar passing through those accounts is clean of human trafficking, clean of narcotics, clean of everything that destroys innocent lives. But the underworld doesn't play nice, Mave. To protect our people, to keep the syndicates of Brighton Beach and the Five Families from swallowing us whole, we operate in the gray."
"And you brought me into the gray without my consent," Mave retorted, though her voice wavered.
"I brought you into my life because you are the only person I trust implicitly," Vincent countered, leaning forward slightly, closing the physical distance between them in the dim cabin light. "Viktor isn't just a disgruntled rival. He’s a remnant of the syndicate branch that tried to wipe out my father ten years ago. When he saw you standing beside me tonight, shining like a beacon in the middle of a snake pit, he realized something dangerous."
Mave held her breath. "What?"
May you like
"He realized you are my blind spot," Vincent whispered, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. "And in my world, a blind spot is a death sentence."
