Chapter 4 - The Confession and the Trap**

The heavy silence inside the executive study was suffocating. Victor Hale stared down at the black USB drive resting on the mahogany desk as if it were a venomous snake coiled to strike. Beads of cold sweat had broken out across his forehead, matting his thinning gray hair to his skin.
“Boss—Adrian, please,” Victor choked out, his slick corporate composure completely disintegrating into whimpering panic as he dropped heavily back into his leather chair. “You don't understand. I can explain everything! The financial restructuring—it was a hedge fund maneuver to protect the syndicate from federal investigators!”
The heavy mahogany doors swung open again behind Adrian.
I stepped into the study.
I had changed into a dark silk blouse and tailored trousers Adrian had left in the suite, my posture upright, my head held high, and my seven-month pregnant belly unmistakable beneath the fabric.
When Victor looked up and saw me walking into the room alive, whole, and breathing, his eyes bulged out of his head with sheer, unadulterated horror. He gasped for air, grabbing the edge of the desk to keep from sliding onto the floor.
“E-Elena?!” Victor shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. “You... you’re dead! We put you in the bay! We dropped you—”
“Drop who in the bay, Victor?” Adrian’s voice cut across the room like a razor blade, cold and lethal.
Victor froze, his mouth hanging open. He slowly shifted his terrified gaze from me back to Adrian, realizing with sickening clarity that his entire web of lies, forgery, and murder had just unraveled completely.
“You told me Elena stole eleven million dollars and fled the country,” Adrian continued, taking a slow, deliberate step toward the desk, leaning his weight forward on his palms as he towered over the shaking lieutenant. “You provided the fabricated wire logs. You forged the server access stamps. And while I was out hunting a ghost you manufactured, you had her kidnapped, tortured, and carved open in a basement.”
“Boss, she’s lying!” Vanessa—no, Victor shrieked frantically, waving his hands in desperate denial. “She’s playing you! She set me up to take the fall for the syndicate leak! Look at her—she’s working with our rivals!”
I walked slowly around the desk, stopping just inches from Victor’s terrified face. I reached down, picked up the black USB drive, and tapped it lightly against his cheek.
“We recovered the unedited server logs, Victor,” I said softly, my voice dripping with cold satisfaction. “Including the audio recordings of you standing over me in that basement, threatening to skin me alive if I didn't hand over the encryption keys to your offshore accounts. Your voice sounds crystal clear on the playback. We played it for Marcus and the boys ten minutes ago. Even your most loyal enforcers think you’re a coward and a thief.”
Victor’s knees buckled. He slid out of his chair, collapsing onto his knees on the Persian rug, clutching at the hem of my trousers like a drowning man grasping at a straw.
“Elena, please! Have mercy! I have a family! I gave twenty years of my life to Moretti Maritime!” Victor sobbed hysterically, tears streaming down his face.
I looked down at him with profound, unyielding disgust, gently pulling my trousers away from his trembling grip. “You gave twenty years to stealing from the man who trusted you, and you spent your last ounces of energy trying to murder an unborn child. You don't know the meaning of mercy, Victor.”
Adrian straightened up, turning his back on the groaning, weeping wreck of his former best friend. He raised two fingers toward the open doorway.
Marcus and Tony stepped immediately into the study, their faces impassive and cold.
“Take him down to the lower holding cells,” Adrian ordered flatly, his voice devoid of any human emotion. “Strip him of his comms, lock him in isolation, and make sure he stays breathing. I want him fully conscious when the federal prosecutors arrive in the morning to collect our corporate corruption evidence.”
“No! No, Adrian, please! Don't put me in a cell! Just shoot me! Just put a bullet in my head!” Victor screamed at the top of his lungs as Marcus and Tony hoisted him up by his arms, dragging his kicking, thrashing body backward across the polished hardwood floor and out into the hallway.
The heavy double doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off Victor’s pathetic wails and plunging the executive study back into a heavy, profound silence.
I let out a long, shuddering breath, the adrenaline that had sustained me all day finally beginning to recede, leaving a dull, bone-deep exhaustion in its wake.
Adrian turned around, walked over to me, and gently placed both hands on my shoulders, his dark eyes searching my face with overwhelming tenderness and guilt.
“I’m sorry,” Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with genuine remorse. “I let a snake into our house, Elena. And because of my blindness, you and our child paid the price.”
“You didn't know,” I said softly, leaning into his touch for the first time in eight months, letting the familiar scent of his cologne wash away the nightmares of the past. “You were manipulated by a master liar.”
“That doesn't excuse what happened to you,” Adrian murmured, sliding his hand down to rest gently over my swollen belly. A tiny kick pulsed against his palm—our baby, acknowledging his father for the very first time.
Adrian froze, a rare, brilliant smile breaking across his harsh features as tears glistened briefly in his dark eyes.
“He’s strong,” Adrian whispered in awe.
“She,” I corrected with a soft smile. “We’re having a girl.”

Adrian looked up from my stomach, meeting my eyes with a fierce, unbreakable vow written across his face. “Then no one will ever, ever hurt either of you again. I swear it on my life.”
