Chapter 2 - The Trap Springs Shut**

The heavy silence in the cramped kitchen stretched like a tightened guitar string, threatening to snap at any second. Adrian’s hand remained frozen, the automatic pistol still leveled at my chest, but the terrifying certainty in his eyes had completely shattered. The ice-cold mafia boss who had walked through my door ready to dispense summary execution was now staring at my protruding belly as if he had just witnessed a ghost materialize out of thin air.

“Elena,” he rasped, his voice cracking slightly on my name, the gun finally dipping toward the linoleum floor. “What... what did they do to you?”

“You mean after your trusted inner circle branded me a traitor and hunted me down like a dog?” I asked bitterly, my voice dripping with cold sarcasm as I pulled my cardigan back together. “Your men didn't bring me to a tribunal, Adrian. They dragged me to a damp, soundproof basement underneath the old shipping docks on Pier 44. The same docks managed exclusively by Victor Hale.”

Adrian flinched as if he had been struck across the face with a lead pipe. “Victor?”

“Oh, did you think I worked alone?” A humorless, dry laugh escaped my lips. “An internal auditor working out of a cubicle somehow bypassing multi-million-dollar offshore accounts without executive clearance signatures? I found the gap in the Caymans ledger, Adrian. But when I took it to Victor to investigate, he didn't thank me. He smiled, locked me in a basement, and spent six weeks trying to extract the encryption keys to wipe his own tracks clean.”

Adrian took a slow, staggering step backward, his broad shoulders hitting the edge of my refrigerator. The terrifying facade of absolute control was entirely gone, replaced by a dark, simmering fury that made the air in the room feel electric and dangerous.

“Victor told me you fled the city with the cash,” Adrian said through gritted teeth, his jaw locked so hard the muscles jumped. “He provided the wire transfer logs, the shell company credentials, and the security footage of you wiping the main server.”

“Because he had the administrative keys to frame me! He’s your right-hand man, Adrian. He had access to every password, every terminal, and every employee badge in the building,” I stepped closer, my voice rising with the righteous anger I had suppressed for eight agonizing months. “While you were busy expanding your criminal empire across three states, your most trusted lieutenant was systematically bleeding your accounts dry behind your back, using me as the sacrificial scapegoat the moment I stumbled onto his ledger.”

Adrian stared at me, his chest heaving under his tailored black coat. He looked down again at my swollen belly, the reality crashing down on him with crushing weight. The woman he had hunted as an enemy was carrying his own flesh and blood, bearing permanent physical scars inflicted by the very man he trusted second only to himself.

“The scar,” Adrian whispered, his voice trembling as he reached out a hesitant hand, stopping an inch away from my waist as if afraid I would shatter. “Did Victor... did he do that?”

“He wanted the flash drive containing the original unedited audit files,” I said quietly, looking directly into his dark, tortured eyes. “I had it sewn into the lining of my bag. They carved me open trying to find it, Adrian. And when I wouldn't break, they threw me into a cell to rot. I only survived because I managed to kill one of the guards with a piece of rusted rebar and crawl out through a ventilation shaft while six months pregnant.”

A low, primal growl vibrated deep within Adrian’s chest—a sound that sent a shiver down my spine. It wasn't the sound of a mafia boss planning a hit; it was the sound of a cornered wolf realizing its mate and pups had been brutally hunted by a traitor within the pack.

“He’s going to die,” Adrian murmured, the words dropping like heavy lead weights onto the floor. “Slowly. In the dark. Exactly like he made you suffer.”

“Words are cheap, Adrian,” I crossed my arms defensively over my chest, refusing to let his sudden display of protective rage melt my defenses completely. “Victor is currently sitting in your penthouse office overseeing your entire financial portfolio while you’re out here hunting ghosts. If you walk back in there today guns blazing without ironclad proof, he’ll spin another lie, and your other lieutenants will back him up. You need more than my word.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed into calculating slits, the master strategist instantly replacing the grieving, furious father. “You said you had a flash drive.”

“I do,” I nodded, walking over to the faux-wood kitchen cabinet and pulling out a hollowed-out ceramic sugar canister hidden at the very back of the top shelf. Inside rested a small, dust-covered black USB drive. “The original unedited server logs, the real Cayman wire transfers bearing Victor’s personal digital signature, and audio recordings of him threatening me in that basement before I escaped.”

Adrian took the drive from my hand, his fingers brushing against mine. The physical contact sent a jolt of electricity through both of us—a reminder of the intense passion we once shared, now resurrected amidst the ashes of betrayal and impending war.

“You kept this the entire time,” he noted softly, looking at the tiny piece of plastic like it held the nuclear codes.

“It was my only insurance policy against you and him,” I replied honestly. “I knew that if I couldn't prove my innocence, I wouldn't last a week in your world.”

Adrian pocketed the drive, his posture stiffening as he squared his shoulders. The hesitation was entirely gone. The trap was set, and the hunter was about to become the hunted.

“Pack your bags, Elena,” Adrian ordered, his voice brooking zero argument.

I raised an eyebrow. “And go where? Back into your gilded cage?”

May you like

“No,” Adrian said, stepping forward and gently placing one large, warm hand over my pregnant belly—a silent, protective gesture that made my breath catch in my throat. “You’re coming home with me. And then, we’re going to invite Victor over for a little family reunion.”
