Chapter 4 - Awakening and Redemption**

Two days later, the morning sun finally broke through the heavy Chicago overcast, casting a warm, golden glow across the private recovery suite at St. Jude’s Memorial.

The heart monitors beeped in a steady, soothing rhythm.

Elena Bennett stirred slowly, her eyelids fluttering as the heavy fog of the medically induced coma began to lift. Her throat felt parched, her body ached as if she had been run over by a freight train, and a sharp, throbbing pain flared along her side where the gash had been stitched.

"Easy, tesoro. Don't try to move too fast."

A deep, gravelly voice broke through the quiet room.

Elena turned her head slowly on the crisp white pillows. Sitting in a chair right beside her hospital bed was Lorenzo. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in a week—his jaw shadowed with stubble, his dark eyes ringed with exhaustion, but his hands... his hands were shaking as he gently held hers against his cheek.

"Enzo..." she whispered, her voice cracking like dry paper. "Am I... am I dead?"

"No, my love. You're alive. You're safe," Enzo choked out, pressing soft, desperate kisses against her knuckles. "You're in the hospital. The doctors patched you up. You're going to make a full recovery."

Memories of that horrific night rushed back into Elena’s mind like a tidal wave—the masked men grabbing her outside the grocery store, the dark, freezing warehouse, the brutal pain, and the terrifying fear that she would die alone in the mud.

Tears spilled over her lashes, hot and fast. "Our baby... Enzo, they took him. They dragged me out there and I thought—"

"Shh, shh, look at me," Enzo interrupted gently, standing up and reaching toward a rolling incubator parked right beside the bed. He carefully lifted a tiny, bundle wrapped in a soft blue knitted blanket and placed it gently into her waiting, trembling arms.

"He's here," Enzo whispered, his own eyes shining with unshed tears. "He's right here, Elena."

Elena looked down. Cradled against her chest was a tiny, perfect baby boy. He had a shock of dark hair, a miniature button nose, and tiny, flawless fingers curled into tight little fists. As she watched, the baby let out a soft, sleepy yawn and snuggled deeper against her chest.

"He's breathing," Elena sobbed, burying her face in his tiny blanket. "He's alive."

"He's a fighter," Enzo said, his voice thick with emotion as he rested his hand gently over both of them, shielding them from the rest of the world. "Just like his mother."

Elena looked up at Enzo, searching his tired, rugged face for the ghosts of the past. "Vance... what happened to Vance, Enzo?"

Enzo’s expression hardened for a fraction of a second before softening again as he looked back down at her. "Marcus Vance won't ever bother us again, Elena. Neither will anyone else who ever thinks they can touch my family. The syndicate is restructured, the threats are neutralized, and my life—every breath I take from this moment forward—belongs to the two of you."

"You promised me a clean cut once," Elena whispered, a faint, bittersweet smile touching her lips. "You promised me a life where I wouldn't have to look over my shoulder."

"I lied," Enzo confessed without a moment of hesitation, gently brushing a lock of blonde hair from her forehead. "I can't live without you, Elena. I tried it for six months, and it nearly destroyed me. If you want to walk away again once you're healed, I won't stop you... but I will follow you to the ends of the earth just to make sure you're breathing."

Elena looked from the tiny face of her newborn son to the fierce, unyielding devotion burning in the eyes of the most feared mafia boss in Chicago. She realized then that safety wasn't about running away from the storm; it was about standing beside the man who was willing to burn down the entire underworld to keep you warm.

She reached up her free hand, resting her palm gently against his rough cheek. "You're an idiot, Lorenzo Vitale."

May you like

"I know," he murmured, leaning his face into her touch, a genuine smile breaking across his hardened features. "But I'm your idiot."
