Chapter 2 - The Sanctum of War**

The private surgical wing on the top floor of St. Jude’s Memorial was locked down tighter than a federal penitentiary. Four armed men in black tactical suits guarded the elevator doors, their submachine guns pointed toward the corridor, while inside the sterile operating theater, the best trauma surgeons Chicago could buy with dirty money or blood were fighting a desperate war for two lives.

Enzo Vitale paced the length of the waiting room like a caged panther. His custom Italian suit was ruined, stiffened with dried mud and Elena’s blood. He hadn't let anyone touch him, hadn't let anyone clean him. He wanted to feel every sting of it as penance.

"Boss," Frankie said cautiously, stepping into the waiting room holding a secure burner phone. "We checked traffic cameras around the warehouse district. The car that dropped her off was a black Lincoln Navigator with masked plates. But traffic analysis tracked it to a secondary property on the North Side. Owned by Marcus Vance."

Marcus Vance.

The name scraped across Enzo’s mind like broken glass. Vance was the head of the rival syndicate operating out of the financial district—a man Enzo had spared six months ago during a dock treaty because Vance had bent the knee. A man who had clearly mistaken mercy for weakness.

Enzo stopped pacing. He turned slowly, his face drained of all humanity, leaving only the hardened marble mask of the monster the Chicago underworld whispered about in locked basements.

"Vance," Enzo whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "He hunted her. He knew she was carrying my blood."

"She was living in a quiet suburb under an alias," Frankie reported, his jaw tight. "Someone leaked her location three days ago. They didn't rob her apartment, Enzo. They snatched her off the street, dragged her to that warehouse, and left her out in the storm to bleed out as a message to us."

A low, guttural growl vibrated deep within Enzo’s chest. The air in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees.

Before Enzo could issue the order to tear Vance’s entire empire down to bedrock, the double doors of the operating theater swung open. Dr. Hayes, chief of trauma surgery, stepped out, removing his blood-stained surgical cap, his face pale and exhausted.

Enzo was across the room in three strides, grabbing the doctor by the lapels of his scrubs with terrifying force.

"Tell me," Enzo demanded, his voice a lethal hiss. "Tell me they're alive."

"She... she's holding on, Mr. Vitale," Dr. Hayes gasped, gripping Enzo’s wrists. "It was touch and go. The trauma triggered severe internal bleeding and premature labor. We had to perform an emergency Caesarean section immediately."

Enzo’s hands loosened slightly on the doctor's coat. His breath hitched. "The baby?"

"A boy," Dr. Hayes said softly, a small, weary smile touching his lips. "He’s tiny—born at just under seven months—and he’s struggling to breathe on his own in the neonatal unit. But he’s alive, Mr. Vitale. He has your stubborn heart."

A ragged breath tore out of Enzo’s throat. He released the doctor, staggering backward a step until his back hit the cold wall. A son. He had a son. And while his newborn baby fought for every breath in an incubator upstairs, the mother of his child was fighting through the night because a rival coward had decided to wage war on a pregnant woman.

"And Elena?" Enzo asked, his voice trembling for the first time in his life.

"She’s in a medically induced coma to let her body recover from the trauma," Dr. Hayes replied. "The next forty-eight hours are critical. If she doesn't develop an infection, she’s going to make it."

Enzo closed his eyes, pressing his palms against his face. For the first time in six months, a prayer crossed his lips. Take me instead. Just leave them.

When Enzo opened his eyes again, all grief had vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating, apocalyptic fury. He turned to Frankie Doyle, who stood at attention like a general awaiting deployment.

"Gather every captain. Empty the armory," Enzo commanded, his voice ringing with absolute, chilling authority. "We are going to Marcus Vance’s estate. I want every single one of his guards in the river before sunrise. And Marcus? I want him alive. I want to personally introduce him to hell."
