Chapter 3 - The Broken Glass and the Black Onyx Ring**

The illusion shattered on a suffocatingly hot Tuesday evening in June.

Elias and I were alone in the grand sunroom overlooking the manicured rose gardens. The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the marble floors. Elias had been uncharacteristically quiet all afternoon, his dark eyes tracking my every movement with an intensity that made my breath hitch.

"Maeve," he said softly, breaking the heavy silence.

"Yes, Elias?" I asked, walking over to pour him a glass of iced water.

"Tell me about your brother Leo’s surgery. The one the Ashford family is so generously financing for you in exchange for your obedience."

The glass slipped from my fingers, shattering against the marble tiles, spraying ice water and crystal shards across our feet. My heart slammed violently against my ribs. I froze, paralyzed by pure, unadulterated terror.

Elias didn't flinch at the sound of breaking glass. Instead, with a fluid, terrifyingly effortless motion, the man who was supposed to have "permanent spinal damage" stood completely upright out of the wheelchair.

He was tall, broad, and towering over me. His legs were strong, steady, and entirely functional.

I gasped, stumbling backward until my spine hit the French doors. "You... you can walk..."

"For three months," Elias said, his voice dangerously low as he stepped toward me, closing the distance between us like a predator stalking its prey. "For three months, I have watched you, tested you, and dissected every lie your so-called family constructed. I knew Sienna had bolted the second she walked out of my hospital room. I knew Margaret engineered this sick little substitution to keep their hooks in my empire."

He stopped just inches from me, his dark eyes burning with an inferno of suppressed fury.

"So tell me, Maeve," he snarled, his fingers gripping my chin, tilting my face up to meet his fierce gaze. "Are you just another spy? Another mercenary sent by the Ashfords to steal shipping codes and sign over my waterfront deeds? Did you sell your soul to save your brother, or is there something else hiding behind those terrified eyes?"

Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and fast. I didn't try to lie anymore. The weight of the secret was crushing me.

"Yes, I lied!" I cried out, my voice cracking with desperation. "I lied because my brother's life was on the line! My mother died when I was ten, and I’ve spent my entire life being invisible, scrubbing floors, and taking orders just to keep Leo alive! Margaret Ashford threatened to pull his funding if I didn't wear Sienna's pearls and step into this hell! But I never spied on you, Elias! I didn't care about your money, your power, or your empire! Every single day I spent in this house, I prayed you wouldn't find out who I really was... because I couldn't bear the thought of you looking at me with disgust."

Elias stared down at me, his chest rising and falling heavily. The anger in his eyes flickered, warring with a sudden, profound shock. He studied my face—not as a threat, but as if he were seeing me for the very first time.

Before he could speak, the heavy oak doors of the sunroom were violently kicked open.
