Chapter 4 - The Syndicate’s Wedding

The winter snowstorm that blanketed Chicago three months later paralyzed the city, but inside the grand ballroom of the Moretti estate, the atmosphere was burning hot with tension, champagne, and quiet terror.

It wasn't a corporate summit. It wasn't a diplomatic treaty signing.

It was a wedding.

And I was the bride.

Standing in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror, I stared at my reflection in absolute disbelief. The dress was a masterpiece of white silk and French lace, custom-sewn in Milan by designers who answered directly to Dante Moretti’s inner circle. My hair was swept up in an intricate chignon, pinned with diamond-encrusted hairpieces that sparkled under the crystal chandeliers.

How had I gone from a freelance translator running late for dinner in Myeongdong to marrying Chicago's most feared mafia boss in a high-security compound?

It hadn't happened overnight. It had been a slow, relentless siege. Dante hadn't just protected me; he had systematically dismantled every barrier I had built. He spent evenings helping Jiànhuī with his homework while I translated complex syndicate documents; he listened to my frustrations, challenged my intellect, and proved time and time again that beneath the brutal, ruthless exterior of a mafia patriarch beat the heart of a man who would burn the entire world to ash to keep his family safe.

And somewhere along the way, between midnight chess matches in his study and quiet mornings watching him laugh with his son, my fear had transformed into something entirely different.

The heavy oak door of the bridal suite opened, and Dante stepped inside.

He wore a pristine black tuxedo, his silk tie perfectly knotted, his granite features softened by an expression of raw, unadulterated awe as he looked at me. For all his power, for all the blood on his hands and the empire he commanded, the way he looked at me in that dress made him look like a man who had just won the only prize that mattered.

"Minseo," he whispered, closing the door behind him and walking across the room with quiet reverence. He stopped right in front of me, his large hands resting gently on my bare shoulders. "You take my breath away. Every single day."

"You didn't give me a choice, Dante," I whispered back, my voice trembling slightly as I looked up into his intense gray eyes. "You engineered this entire marriage from the moment we met in Seoul."

Dante smiled, a dark, wicked curve of his lips. "I am a strategist, mia cara. When I see something that belongs in my life, I don't leave it to chance."

"And if I had said no?"

"You didn't," he murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes. "Because you knew, even then, that my heart stopped beating the day Jiànhuī was lost—and you were the one who brought us both back to life."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a velvet box, opening it to reveal a magnificent, heavy diamond ring flanked by two deep-blue sapphires—the colors of the Mediterranean and the midnight sky.

"This isn't just a syndicate alliance," Dante said, his voice dropping into a fierce, absolute sincerity. "This is my vow. To you. To Jiànhuī. We are yours, Minseo. For as long as I breathe."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. I lifted my left hand, letting him slide the heavy diamond onto my ring finger.

"If you ever lie to me about your business, Dante Moretti," I warned softly, a final flash of my independent spirit breaking through, "I will translate every single one of your offshore accounts to the FBI."

Dante threw his head back and laughed—a rich, booming sound that I had rarely heard from him, echoing off the silk-lined walls of the room. He pulled me against his chest, crushing me in a warm, protective embrace, and pressed his lips softly against my forehead.

"Deal," he whispered against my skin. "Though I warn you, my accounts are far more complicated than Mandarin grammar."

Moments later, Salvatore knocked on the door. "Mr. Moretti. The guests are waiting. The ceremony is ready."

May you like

Dante offered me his arm, his dark gaze locked onto mine with fierce, unyielding devotion. I slid my hand into the crook of his elbow, feeling the hard muscle beneath his jacket and the faint, jagged scar across his knuckles.

Together, the mafia king and the Seoul translator walked out of the room to face an empire that would never dare cross us again.
