Chapter 8 - The Family Meeting

“To put it simply, my dear,” Arthur smiled warmly, tapping a finger against the signature line, “Rachel is living in a house that legally belongs to a trust under your absolute control. And David’s corporate salary is tied directly to the commercial leases that you now have the power to terminate at will.”
The sheer magnitude of the revelation took a moment to fully register. For years, Rachel had acted like an aristocratic queen lording over everyone around her, treating Emma and me like dirt beneath her designer heels, all while living on an estate she didn't actually own.
“Does David know about this?” I asked quietly.
“Not yet,” Arthur replied. “He assumed he would inherit everything outright once probate closed next month. Which is why I suggest we schedule a formal family meeting at my office tomorrow morning. Let them walk right into the trap.”
The next morning, the conference room at Vance & Associates looked like a war zone before a battle. David sat at the far end of the mahogany table, looking disheveled and frantic, flanked by Rachel—who looked like she had aged ten years over the weekend, her face pale and pinched with rage.
When I walked into the room accompanied by Marcus and carrying the certified trust papers, David stood up so fast his chair screeched loudly against the carpet.
“Clara! What is the meaning of this? Why are your lawyers dragging us into court?” David shouted, slamming his hand on the table.
Rachel crossed her arms, sneering viciously. “She’s just throwing a pathetic temper tantrum because she got kicked out of polite society for attacking me on Thanksgiving! David, make your wife drop these ridiculous divorce papers before I sue her for assault!”
I didn't flinch. I walked calmly to the head of the table, sat down in the plush leather chair, and opened my folder.

“You might want to check who owns this building, Rachel,” I said smoothly.
