Chapter 10 - A New Thanksgiving

Six months later, the autumn air carried the crisp, clean scent of a fresh start. The bitter legal battles were over, concluding with a settlement that left Rachel legally evicted from the colonial estate and stripped of her unearned monthly allowances, while David was forced to start over from scratch in a modest downtown apartment after his corporate embezzlement and asset hiding came to light during the trust audit.
They had tried everything—begging, legal threats, emotional manipulation—but the ironclad terms of Elizabeth’s trust and the protective custody orders stood firm.
In our new, sunlit home, the dining room table was set for a massive holiday feast. The scent of roasted turkey, cinnamon apples, and warm pumpkin pie filled the air. There was no tension in the room, no walking on eggshells, and no toxic whispers from people who looked down on us.
Emma walked into the dining room wearing a bright yellow dress, holding her grandmother’s porcelain doll securely in one arm, while she carefully placed a homemade paper turkey right in the center of the table.
“Mommy, is everything ready?” she asked, her eyes sparkling with pure, unburdened joy.
I smiled, walking over to wrap my arms around her, kissing the top of her head as I looked out the bay windows toward the golden autumn leaves dancing in the wind.
“Everything is perfect, sweetie,” I whispered, feeling a deep, abiding peace settle into my soul.

The door chime rang softly. I opened it to find my cousin Marcus and a few close friends standing on the porch holding bottles of cider and laughing brightly. As we all gathered around the table, taking our seats in a home built on love, respect, and unconditional protection, I knew one thing for certain:
For the first time in our lives, every single person sitting at this table truly belonged here—and no one would ever be left out in the cold again.
