Chapter 8 - The Logistics Floor

Two weeks later, the air inside the Metro Logistics Distribution Hub smelled of fresh cardboard, shrink-wrap, and heavy industrial coffee.
Ethan stood in the middle of the massive warehouse floor wearing a high-visibility yellow safety vest, steel-toed boots, and a grey cotton t-shirt. His hands were calloused from handling heavy inventory crates, and his back ached from standing on concrete for eight hours straight, but for the first time in years, he felt a strange, profound sense of peace.
No one here cared about what car he drove. In fact, most of the guys working the loading docks drove beat-up Honda Civics and ten-year-old pickup trucks. Respect here wasn't bought with flashy clothes or rented sports cars; it was earned through punctuality, teamwork, and hard physical labor.
"Hey, Miller! Grab that hand truck and move pallet four over to sector B!" barked Dave, the shift floor manager—a burly, no-nonsense veteran with gravel in his voice.
"On it, Dave!" Ethan called back, his voice steady and clear.
He grabbed the steel handles of the hand truck, planted his boots firmly against the concrete, and hauled the heavy pallet across the floor with synchronized effort. As he worked, he watched the large delivery trucks pulling in and out of the loading bays, transporting real goods to real businesses across the region.

It wasn't glamorous, but it was real. And for Ethan, real was the greatest luxury he had ever experienced.
