Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Exhaust

The deep, guttural roar of the Ferrari’s V8 engine faded as Antoine steered the red supercar down the asphalt boulevard, leaving behind a thick cloud of dust and an even thicker cloud of absolute, suffocating humiliation.
In the parking lot, the silence was deafening. The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly, but nobody felt the heat. All eyes were locked on Ethan, who stood frozen next to the spot where he had been leaning just minutes before. His stylish beige jacket suddenly felt like a straitjacket, and his crisp white button-down felt soaked in sweat.
Chloe, the girl who had gasped in awe at his "birthday present" story, crossed her arms tightly over her chest. She glared at Ethan with eyes burning hot enough to melt steel.
"Ten grand," Chloe repeated, her voice dripping with venom. "Well, Ethan? Are you going to pay up, or was that another one of your pathetic lies?"
Ethan swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. His Adam's apple bobbed up and down frantically. "Chloe, wait... it’s not what it looks like. I—my dad actually bought it, but maybe he registered it under someone else's name for tax purposes! Yeah, that's it! A corporate lease loophole!"
"Shut up, Ethan," muttered Tyler, one of the guys who had been hanging on his every word all afternoon. Tyler stepped back, eyeing Ethan with undisguised disgust. "You stood there for two hours acting like a billionaire heir. You made us all look like complete idiots. I'm deleting every photo I took with you today."
Without waiting for another word, Tyler spun on his heel and marched toward his own car. One by one, the rest of the group dispersed. The girls didn't even spare Ethan a glance as they walked away toward the exit of the commercial district, whispering among themselves and casting cruel, mocking looks over their shoulders.
Within ninety seconds, Ethan’s grand empire of lies had completely evaporated. He was left standing entirely alone in the empty parking lot, staring at the empty space where the red Ferrari had just parked.

He didn't know who Antoine was. He didn't know where the car had come from. All he knew was that his social standing in the city’s influencer circles was dead, buried, and permanently erased.
