Chapter 3 - The Sheriff’s House of Cards**

By dawn, the first phase of our operation was already underway. While Tyler rested comfortably in recovery after a grueling six-hour surgery, my old teammates—ghosts from my past known throughout the intelligence community as Echo Squad—had quietly infiltrated Livingston County under cover of darkness.
Marcus Vance, our former communications and cyber-warfare specialist, had set up a mobile tactical command center inside a nondescript utility van parked three blocks from the county sheriff’s department.
I met Marcus behind the hospital at 6:00 a.m. He handed me a ruggedized military tablet displaying a complex web of financial records, offshore accounts, wiretap transcripts, and digital surveillance footage.
“Barnes isn't just a dirty cop, boss,” Marcus reported, tapping the screen. “He’s running a full-scale criminal enterprise out of the sheriff's office. Drug trafficking protection rings, land seizure scams, and extortion. We pulled decades of hidden bank statements. He’s got over two million dollars in illicit funds stashed in local shell companies.”
“What about the shooting last night?” I asked, leaning over the screen.
“We pulled dashcam and bodycam footage from the deputy who responded with Barnes. The kid was walking home from basketball practice. Barnes was drunk off duty, pulled his cruiser onto the sidewalk, harassed Tyler for looking at him ‘disrespectfully,’ and when Tyler tried to walk away, Barnes drew his service weapon and shot him in cold blood just to terrorize him. Then he planted a pocketknife on the boy to fake a self-defense report.”
My fists clenched so tightly my knuckles turned white. “He tried to frame my son for attacking an armed officer.”
“Standard playbook for him,” Marcus replied, his eyes cold. “And District Attorney Harris is in on it. They’ve buried twelve civilian brutality complaints against Barnes in the last two years alone.”
“Not this one,” I said softly. “Prepare the evidence packet. I want copies sent simultaneously to the Colorado State Attorney General, the FBI’s public corruption division, and every major news outlet between Denver and Grand Junction. But before we drop the legal hammer, we need to neutralize his local protection network.”

“Understood,” Marcus grinned darkly. “Ghost Squad is ready to dance.”
