Chapter 1 - The Discharge Day Ambush**

The day Emily left the hospital, her husband was waiting outside as if she still belonged to him. Daniel stood beneath the covered entrance with bloodshot eyes, an unshaven face, and the watch she had given him on their fifth anniversary. Behind him stood Jessica, the woman he had been sleeping with, and Margaret, the mother who had slapped Emily while she was eight months pregnant. Emily placed one hand over her belly and realized the most frightening thing was not that she hated Daniel, but that part of her no longer felt anything at all.
Daniel stepped toward her and quietly asked her to come home so they could fix their marriage. Emily looked past him and noticed Jessica wearing Daniel’s dark blue scarf, another gift Emily had once chosen for him with love. Margaret sighed as if Emily’s pain were an inconvenience and reminded her that they were still a family. Emily answered that they had stopped being family the moment Margaret struck a pregnant woman and Daniel stood there watching.
Only three days earlier, Emily had been rushed to that same hospital terrified that she might lose her baby. Daniel had blocked her from leaving their house during an argument, pushed her backward, and watched in horror as she fell hard enough to bleed. He later insisted he had never meant for her to fall, but intention meant very little when Emily remembered clutching her stomach and waiting desperately for the baby to move. In the ambulance, when a paramedic asked whether she felt safe returning home with Daniel, Emily had finally whispered the answer she could no longer deny: “No.”
The nightmare had begun weeks earlier when Daniel started coming home later and later from work. Emily was thirty-two weeks pregnant, exhausted, swollen, and trying not to notice how often the name Jessica appeared in his explanations. Jessica stayed late, Jessica ordered dinner for the team, Jessica needed help with a presentation, and Jessica supposedly said hello. Then one night Daniel walked through the door at 12:17 a.m. smelling like another woman’s perfume and lied directly to Emily’s face about where he had been.
When a restaurant receipt slipped from his coat, Emily found two dinners, two cocktails, one dessert, and a time stamp of 10:46 p.m. Daniel first claimed he had been working, then admitted he had eaten with Jessica after everyone else left. He told Emily that Jessica’s relationship had recently ended and accused his pregnant wife of reacting exactly the way he had feared she would. When Emily asked whether anything physical had happened between them, Daniel answered no so quickly and confidently that she desperately wanted to believe him.
For a short time, Emily tried to convince herself she had overreacted. Jessica even sent a white knitted blanket for the baby and messaged Emily to say she looked beautiful at her shower, which made Emily feel guilty for suspecting her. Then one afternoon Daniel left his phone on the kitchen counter while he showered, and a message from Jessica appeared across the screen. “Did she believe you?” was followed moments later by another message that made Emily’s blood run cold: “You promised me this was almost over.”
Emily confronted Daniel upstairs, and after several unbearable seconds of silence, he finally admitted the truth. He had been sleeping with Jessica for months, including during the same weeks he was discussing baby names, decorating a nursery, and kissing Emily goodnight. Emily ordered him out of the bedroom and spent the night listening to him cry downstairs, realizing that every missed appointment and every late meeting now carried a different meaning. The next afternoon, she packed a small bag and planned to stay at a hotel because she needed distance from the man she no longer recognized.
Before Emily could leave, the doorbell rang, and Margaret walked inside with Jessica standing directly behind her. Margaret produced printed screenshots that appeared to show Emily secretly messaging another man and suggested the timing of her pregnancy was suspicious. Emily knew the messages were fake, but what crushed her was hearing Daniel say only that he “believed” the baby was his instead of immediately defending his wife. Jessica stood nearby pretending to be uncomfortable while Margaret accused Emily of trapping her son, and Daniel allowed every word to hang in the room.
When Emily demanded that they leave, Margaret stepped closer and slapped her across the face. Daniel whispered, “Mom,” but did nothing to remove her, defend Emily, or stop the humiliation that had already gone too far. Emily grabbed her bag and tried to leave, but Daniel blocked her path, insisted she was too emotional to go anywhere, and eventually shoved her when she tried to move past him. Seconds later, Emily was on the floor with pain tearing through her body, blood beneath her, and everyone suddenly realizing how far their cruelty had gone.

At the hospital, the baby’s heartbeat was finally found, but Emily knew she would never return to that house. She contacted a divorce attorney from her hospital bed while Daniel called forty-three times and Margaret was turned away by security. Yet one question kept circling in Emily’s mind: if the screenshots were fake, who had created them, and why had Daniel seemed so strangely prepared when his mother produced them? On the morning of her discharge, the tablet Daniel had packed with her belongings synchronized a message from Jessica that read, “Your mom nearly ruined everything,” and Emily realized the affair was only the beginning of what had been done to her [cite: Yet one question kept circling in Emily’s mind: if the screenshots were fake, who had created them, and why had Daniel seemed so strangely prepared when his mother produced them?
