Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the Empire**

Diego stumbled backward into the foyer, his face completely drained of color, his knees shaking so violently he nearly dropped his briefcase.
“Alvin... Mr. Sterling!” Diego stammered, raising his hands in a frantic, defensive gesture as he plastered a false, trembling smile across his face. “Thank God you’re here! Clara... Clara had some sort of medical episode—she wandered out onto the patio in the cold, and I was just trying to help her—!”
Before Diego could finish his pathetic, transparent lie, my father crossed the distance between them with astonishing speed. With a sharp, cracking impact, Alvin Sterling’s fist collided squarely with Diego’s jaw, sending my husband sprawling hard across the imported Italian marble floor. h
“If my daughter or my grandchild do not survive tonight,” my father whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, controlled fury that echoed off the high ceiling, “I will personally dismantle every single asset, every bank account, and every corporate dream you have ever had, and spend the rest of my billions ensuring you rot in a maximum-security prison until the day you die.”
Sirens wailed in a chorus outside as county sheriff deputies and paramedics swarmed through the open front doors. Two burly paramedics rushed past my father with a heated gurney, bursting out onto the rear patio to where I lay unconscious. They immediately wrapped me in thermal space blankets, hooked up intravenous warm saline drips, and rushed me into the back of an awaiting ambulance while administering emergency oxygen.
As the ambulance doors slammed shut, my father turned back toward the foyer, where two county sheriff deputies were standing over a cowering Diego, clicking heavy steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.
“Diego Vance,” the lead deputy announced formally, reading him his rights, “you are under arrest for attempted domestic murder, aggravated assault of a pregnant individual, and domestic abuse.”
“You can’t do this! This is a private family matter!” Diego shrieked, thrashing uselessly against the deputies as they hauled him to his feet. “She’s my wife! I have rights to our corporate assets!”
“Your corporate rights were terminated the second you tried to murder my daughter,” my father stated coldly, tossing Diego’s briefcase containing the forged transfer papers straight onto the marble floor. “And my corporate legal team has already filed an emergency injunction freezing every cent of your personal accounts and revoking your partnership status at Vance & Sterling Holdings. You are completely, permanently ruined.”
As the police escorted a sobbing, ruined Diego out to the cruiser, my father climbed into the front seat of the lead police escort vehicle, instructing the driver to follow the ambulance directly to the regional trauma center.
Inside the sterile, brightly lit emergency ward of the hospital, the medical team worked frantically to stabilize my core body temperature and monitor the baby’s vital signs. For several agonizing hours, I floated in a hazy twilight of pain and exhaustion, surrounded by the rhythmic beeping of heart monitors and the warm, comforting presence of my father holding my hand tightly against his cheek.
By sunrise, the crisis had passed. The pediatric specialist walked into my private recovery room with a bright, encouraging smile, confirming that despite the terrifying trauma, the baby’s heartbeat was strong, steady, and completely healthy.
I looked over at my father, who sat in the armchair beside my bed, looking exhausted yet profoundly relieved.

“You’re safe now, Clara,” my father whispered, kissing my forehead gently. “The nightmare is over.”
