Chapter 5 - The Sweet Taste of Freedom and a Brand New Beginning

By Friday evening, the ink on the closing documents was dry, the funds were safely deposited into my corporate account, and the Brookfield house officially belonged to Victor Sterling, who had already hired a demolition crew to gut the interior and turn it into modern rental apartments.

Clare and I sat on the plush leather sofa of our penthouse loft, the soft glow of the city skyline illuminating our living room. On the coffee table sat a bottle of sparkling apple cider and two crystal flutes.

My phone buzzed one final time. It was a text message from my father, stripped of all arrogance, dripping with pure desperation: Ian, please. The motel is horrible. Tessa has nowhere to go, and your mother hasn't stopped crying. Can we please talk? We are your family.

I stared at the screen for a long moment. Then, with a calm and deliberate motion, I tapped my screen, blocked my father's number, blocked my mother's number, and finally blocked Tessa's number.

I laid the phone face down on the table, poured the sparkling cider into the flutes, and handed one to my wife.

"To new beginnings," I smiled, clinking my glass against hers.

"To boundaries," Clare laughed, her eyes sparkling with absolute peace.

The bloodline had been fractured, yes, but out of the broken pieces, a brand-new family was about to be born—one built on mutual respect, hard work, and zero tolerance for flying loafers.
