Chapter 4 - The Open House Massacre and the Mystery Buyer

Wednesday afternoon arrived with the fierce intensity of a tropical storm. Melissa’s open house was scheduled for 2:00 PM, and by 1:45 PM, a line of luxury vehicles was already snaking down Brookfield Avenue. Word had gotten out that a pristine, fully updated suburban home was hitting the market far below market value for a quick cash sale.

My parents and Tessa had been forced to relocate temporarily to a budget motel three miles away—a reality check so violent that Dad had called me three times crying, begging for mercy. I let every single call go straight to voicemail.

Clare, looking radiant in a flowing emerald green maternity dress, insisted on coming with me to witness the final chapter. She stood beside me on the front porch as Melissa welcomed prospective buyers at the front door.

"Are you holding up okay?" I asked softly, wrapping my arm around her waist and kissing the top of her head.

"I've never felt better," Clare smiled, her eyes bright and confident. "Watching karma dismantle their empire in seventy-two hours is the best prenatal vitamin I could ask for."

At 2:15 PM, a sleek matte-black Bentley pulled up to the curb. Out stepped Victor Sterling, a notoriously ruthless real estate developer and multi-millionaire restaurateur who happened to be one of my primary business rivals—and, ironically, a secret admirer of my culinary empire.

Victor strode up the walkway, sunglasses perched on his nose, looking around the neighborhood with an appraising eye. He spotted me and Clare standing by the pristine landscaping, and a slow, shark-like grin spread across his face.

"Ian," Victor called out, extending a hand. "I heard a rumor through the grapevine that a prime property was being dumped on the market below value. I didn't realize it was your family's old homestead."

"Victor," I shook his hand firmly. "Looking to expand your portfolio?"

"Always," Victor said, turning to Melissa, who was holding the property disclosure files. "Melissa, I don't even need to tour the inside. I know the build quality of these 90s developments. I'll offer full cash asking price, waive all inspections, and close by Friday afternoon. Take it off the market right now."

Melissa blinked, barely hiding her shock. "Mr. Sterling, we just listed it twenty-four hours ago—"

"I don't care," Victor interrupted smoothly, pulling a sleek gold fountain pen from his breast pocket. "I have the cash wired and ready. Write up the contract."

From across the street, sitting parked in the passenger seat of an old, dented Honda Civic, my mother and sister were watching the entire scene unfold. Through the rolled-down window, I could see Mom hyperventilating into a brown paper bag while Tessa pounded her fists against the dashboard in hysterical, unbridled fury. They watched in real-time as their safe haven, their free ride, and their golden cage were sold off to my biggest business rival in less than three minutes.
