Chapter 3 - The Interruption**

The sudden silence in the grand ballroom was absolute. The string quartet stopped playing mid-measure, the chatter of two hundred elite guests evaporated instantly, and every head turned toward the double doors where my attorney and the two sheriff deputies stood framed in the doorway.
Luca froze, his hands still resting on my waist. His brow furrowed in sudden, rising confusion and irritation as he scanned the unexpected arrivals.
“What is the meaning of this?” Luca demanded, raising his voice so it carried across the silent room. He dropped his hands from my waist and stepped forward defensively. “This is a private wedding reception! Security, escort these people out immediately!”
None of the venue security guards moved. They all knew Richard Vance, and more importantly, they recognized the uniform badges of the county sheriff’s department.
Richard Vance stepped forward into the spotlight of the dance floor, his silver hair gleaming under the crystal chandelier, holding a thick manila folder in his hand. He looked past Luca and locked eyes directly with me. I gave him a subtle nod.
“Mr. Luca Moretti?” Richard asked, his voice ringing out with chilling legal clarity across the ballroom.
“Yes? Who the hell are you?” Luca snapped, his face flushing with embarrassment and anger as whispers began to sweep through the crowd of seated guests.
“I am attorney Richard Vance, legal counsel for Mrs. Jessica Moretti,” Richard announced formally, opening the manila folder. “We are here to serve formal notice of immediate legal separation, activation of the prenuptial domestic-abuse forfeiture clause, and a criminal complaint for domestic assault.”
Laughter—nervous, disbelieving laughter—erupted from Wendy near the front row.
“Are you out of your mind?!” Wendy shrieked, standing up from her chair and marching toward the dance floor, her face contorted with fury. “My son did not assault anyone! It was a wedding cake joke! Everyone saw it! It’s tradition!”
“Mrs. Moretti senior,” Richard replied coldly, not breaking eye contact, “tradition does not include physical battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, or the deliberate violation of a binding prenuptial contract.”
Luca spun around to face me, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and blind rage. He lunged toward me, his hand raised in a threatening gesture. “Jessi! What kind of sick game are you playing?! Tell these people this is a joke right now!”
Before Luca’s hand could come anywhere near me, the two sheriff deputies crossed the floor with professional speed, stepping firmly between us and grabbing Luca’s arms, pinning them behind his back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.
*Clack.*
Gasps echoed through the ballroom like a collective intake of breath.
“Luca Moretti, you are under arrest for domestic assault,” the lead deputy announced loudly, reading him his rights as Luca thrashed wildly against the restraints.
“Get your hands off me! You can't do this! Do you know who my family is?!” Luca roared, his face turning a violent shade of purple as he struggled against the deputies. He glared at me with pure, unadulterated murderous hatred. “Jessi! You bitch! You planned this! I’ll destroy you!”
I stepped forward, looking down at my handcuffed husband with absolute, unshakeable serenity.
“You told me to remember my place, Luca,” I said softly, my voice carrying clearly through the silent room. “I just did.”
Phoebe stepped out from behind the deputies, walking up to the DJ booth. With a flick of a switch, she plugged an auxiliary cord into the sound system’s master audio board.
A second later, the unmistakable audio recording of Luca’s voice began broadcasting loudly through the massive ballroom speakers.
*“Smile, Jessi. Don't embarrass me... A woman who refuses to listen needs to be taught sometimes... Once we’re married, you’ll stop acting like you can just walk away.”*
The audio played on, capturing every harsh, threatening word he had spoken over the past year.

Wendy screamed, covering her ears and stumbling backward into her chair as the entire room listened in stunned, horrified silence to the true nature of the man they had been celebrating.
The illusion of the perfect marriage was completely shattered, and the empire Luca thought he was marrying into vanished into thin air.
