Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack**

The hours between dinner and midnight felt like walking through slow-motion quicksand. I watched Marissa laugh at something Graham said across the living room, her eyes shining with a happiness I had prayed for years she would find. Every smile she gave him felt like a physical blow to my stomach, knowing the cruel, mercenary reality ticking away behind his handsome facade.
When Graham finally excused himself around 11:30 p.m., claiming he needed to check on an urgent legal email in the home office, I knew my time had run out.
Instead of going to my bedroom to cry or panic, I locked my bathroom door, pulled my hidden backup phone from the lining of my old vanity drawer, and dialed a number I hadn't used in ten years.
Marcus Vance.
Not related to my ex-husband, but rather my younger brother—a ruthless, high-powered senior partner at one of Chicago’s most aggressive corporate litigation firms. When I divorced Julian years ago, Marcus had begged me to let him ruin my ex-husband financially, but I had chosen a quiet, peaceful life instead. Now, peace was a luxury I could no longer afford.
The phone picked up on the second ring.
— Elena? Do you have any idea what time it is?
— Marcus, I need you. I need your entire litigation team, a forensic accountant, and a private investigator who specializes in maritime fraud and trust manipulation. Right now.
The sleepy confusion in my brother’s voice vanished instantly, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of a veteran trial lawyer.
— Talk to me. What happened?
I spoke fast, spilling every horrific detail: Julian’s reappearance, Graham’s engineered seduction, the fraudulent marriage certificate signed three days ago, and the multi-million-dollar trust trap designed to fleece my daughter of her rightful inheritance.
When I finished, the silence on the other end of the line was heavy, lethal, and absolute.
— They married her three days ago without your consent or knowledge, and they’re trying to force an administrative sign-off tonight? Marcus asked, his voice dropping an octave into a cold, dangerous register.
— Yes. They’re waiting for me in the study right now.
— Don’t sign a single paper, Elena, Marcus instructed smoothly. Walk into that study. Hand them a blank folder. Keep them talking for exactly twenty minutes. Because as we speak, my cyber-forensics team is hacking into Graham’s offshore corporate accounts, and federal marshals are already en route to serve Julian Vance with an emergency asset-freeze warrant for mail fraud and interstate conspiracy. Let’s see how much charm your new son-in-law has when he’s facing federal penitentiary time.
I hung up the phone, took a deep, steadying breath, and checked my reflection in the mirror. The frightened mother was gone. In her place stood a woman ready to burn an empire to the ground to protect her child.
I grabbed an empty manila folder from my desk, walked down the dimly lit hallway, and pushed open the heavy oak door of the study.

Graham and Julian were sitting by the fireplace, pouring themselves glasses of celebratory whiskey. They looked up as I entered, their faces gleaming with the arrogant triumph of predators who thought the hunt was already over.
