Chapter 2 - The Ghost from the Past**

The scream tore from my throat before I could swallow it back, echoing against the quiet suburban fences. Standing ten feet away from us in the damp grass was a man I hadn't laid eyes on in twenty-two years.

Julian Vance.

My ex-husband. The man who had packed a single suitcase and walked out on us when Marissa was barely four years old, leaving us with mounting debt, shattered dreams, and a broken home. He looked older, heavier around the waist, with graying temples and cheap, flashy clothes that screamed desperation, but the cruel, calculating glint in his eyes hadn't changed a bit.

“Hello, Elena,” Julian said, offering a sickeningly familiar, crooked smirk. “It’s been a while. You’ve aged remarkably well, considering you raised a scarred kid all by yourself.”

I staggered backward, my back hitting the rough bark of the oak tree. I looked from Julian to Graham, my brain struggling to bridge the impossible chasm between my past nightmare and my daughter's present happiness.

“You...” I breathed, my voice shaking uncontrollably. “You’re... how do you two even know each other?”

Graham stepped up beside Julian, clapping the older man familiarly on the shoulder. “Allow me to introduce you properly, Elena. Julian isn't just an old ghost. He’s my primary business partner and financial backer. Or, to be more precise, the man who hired me for a very specific corporate acquisition.”

“A corporate acquisition?” I repeated, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. “Marissa is my daughter, not a company!”

“Oh, but she’s tied to a very lucrative asset trust,” Julian interjected, stepping further into the pale light of the patio lamp. “When my wealthy, childless uncle passed away three years ago, his multi-million-dollar estate was placed into a strict family trust. The primary clause? The inheritance only releases to his direct bloodline descendants upon their marriage—and specifically, to the first-born grandchild who successfully integrates into high society.”

Julian sneered, gesturing vaguely toward the house where Marissa was still washing her hands in the bathroom. “Unfortunately, my dear brother left me out of his will entirely, citing my past ‘abandonment issues.’ But the trust did stipulate that my legitimate daughter—our Marissa—is the sole legal heir. The catch? She was too reclusive, too insecure, and too isolated to ever find a husband on her own. She would have died an old maid, and the trust would have gone to charity.”

The horrifying puzzle pieces clicked together in my mind with sickening clarity. Every sweet date, every flower, every loving glance across the dinner table—it had all been a lie. A scripted performance designed to trap my innocent daughter.

“You paid him,” I whispered, staring at Graham with absolute horror. “You paid him to seduce my daughter.”

“Not just seduce her, Elena,” Graham corrected smoothly, checking his gold wristwatch. “I married her at a quiet registry office downtown three days ago. The grand wedding she’s planning for next month is just the public celebration for your friends and family. And legally, the moment that marriage certificate was signed and filed, my name was added to the trust's spousal asset clause.”

Julian beamed with pride, like a criminal admiring his own masterpiece. “And now, Elena, my dear ex-wife, it’s time for you to sign over your signature release as the secondary trust administrator. Once you sign, Graham gets his multi-million-dollar payout, I get my cut of the capital release, and your precious Marissa remains blissfully unaware that her entire fairy tale was nothing more than a well-executed corporate hit.”
