Chapter 5 - The Heart of the Cole Empire
Three months later, the Cole estate looked entirely different.
The cold, minimalist aesthetic hadn't vanished completely, but it was now softened by vibrant splashes of life: framed fingerpaintings hung in the grand gallery, fresh flowers bloomed on every windowsill, and the sound of genuine, joyful laughter echoed freely down the marble corridors.
The hostile takeover attempt had failed miserably, resulting in Julian’s permanent imprisonment and the consolidation of Ethan’s undisputed authority over Cole Technologies. But corporate victory was the last thing on Ethan’s mind as he stood on the back veranda, watching the sun set brilliantly over Lake Michigan.
Footsteps approached softly from behind. A warm cashmere blanket draped over his shoulders, carrying the familiar, comforting scent of sandalwood and vanilla.
"You're going to catch a cold standing out here in the autumn breeze," Ruby said softly, leaning her hip against the stone railing beside him.
Ethan turned his head, looking down at her with a gaze so full of raw, unfiltered devotion that it made her breath catch. He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear.
"I used to think the cold was the only safe place, Ruby," Ethan murmured, his voice rich and low. "I thought if I didn't feel anything, nothing could ever hurt me or my children again."
"And now?" Ruby asked, her brown eyes sparkling with gentle amusement.
"Now, I realize I was freezing myself to death," Ethan replied softly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box, opening it to reveal an exquisite, custom-designed diamond ring centered around a rare blue sapphire—matching the color of his eyes, and symbolizing the warmth that had thawed his frozen world.
Ruby gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Ethan... what is this?"
"When you walked through those front gates three months ago, I hired you to play a mother on a one-week trial," Ethan said, dropping gracefully to one knee on the cold stone veranda. "I was a stubborn, arrogant fool who didn't deserve you. But you didn't just fix my children—you fixed my soul. You became the absolute heart of this family, Ruby. Will you stay? Not as a nanny, not on a trial... but as my wife, and our forever?"
From the French doors behind them, Leo and Lily pressed their faces against the glass, holding up a large, handmade banner that read: SAY YES, RUBY! while giggling hysterically.
Tears of pure happiness spilled over Ruby’s eyelashes. She looked down at the man who had torn down his own fortress just to let love in.

Ethan slid the ring onto her finger and stood up, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their past, present, and future together. The temporary job had ended, but a lifetime of true warmth was just beginning.
