Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup and the Corporate Vultures

While the atmosphere inside the Cole estate was slowly thawing under Ruby’s chaotic, nurturing warmth, the corporate world outside was boiling over with hostile intent.

Cole Technologies was in the middle of a massive multi-billion-dollar merger with an international syndicate. But behind the scenes, Ethan’s cousin and primary board challenger, Julian Cole, was orchestrating a ruthless coup. Julian knew that Ethan’s vulnerability lay in his family life. If Julian could prove to the board of directors that Ethan was an absentee, unstable guardian, emergency clauses in the corporate charter would trigger a forced transfer of voting shares, stripping Ethan of his CEO title and seizing control of the entire empire.

It was Friday evening when the storm broke.

Ethan was locked away in his private study on the third floor, surrounded by financial audits, legal briefs, and glowing monitors. The pressure was suffocating. If he lost this merger, his entire life's work would crumble.

A soft knock echoed at the door, followed by the turning of the brass handle. Ruby walked in carrying a steaming mug of chamomile tea and a plate of slightly burnt chocolate chip cookies.

"You haven't eaten since noon," Ruby said, placing the tray down right on top of a stack of confidential merger documents.

Ethan rubbed his temples, looking pale and exhausted beneath the harsh desk lamp. "Get that out of here, Ruby. I don't have time for domestic distractions. Julian is calling an emergency board meeting for Monday morning. He’s claiming that my personal life is a liability, and he’s planning to petition family court for emergency custody of Leo and Lily on the grounds of 'parental neglect'."

Ruby paused, her hands stopping on the edge of the desk. "Custody? He wants to take your children?"

"He doesn't care about the children," Ethan muttered bitterly, staring into space. "He wants my voting shares. And the court will look at this cold, unfeeling house, look at the sixteen nannies who fled in six months, and they just might hand the kids right to him."

Ruby didn't hesitate. She stepped around the desk, grabbed Ethan by the shoulders, and forced him to look directly into her eyes.

"Listen to me, Ethan," Ruby said fiercely, using his first name for the very first time. "You are terrified of losing control because you think control is the only way to keep people safe. But control is what built this prison. If you want to beat Julian, you don't need a better spreadsheet. You need to show the world—and your children—that you actually know how to love them."

Ethan stared at her, mesmerized by the raw, unyielding courage radiating from her. Before he could speak, the study doors flew open.

Julian Cole stood in the doorway, flanked by two corporate bailiffs and a state family services social worker holding a clipboard. A smug, venomous smirk played across Julian’s face.

"Well, well, well," Julian sneered, stepping into the room. "Working late, cousin? I'm afraid your time as head of this family—and this company—is officially over. Social services is here to remove the children for their own safety."
